Seniority System Holding Back Ascent of Female Staff
Yomiuri: Why are female stationmasters still so rare?
On June 23, a woman's name and picture was added to the line of photos of past stationmasters displayed at JR Yotsuya Station in Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo. Hiroko Shirayama had become the station's first female stationmaster since it opened in 1894, following 40 men. It is no longer unusual to see women driving or conducting trains, but female stationmasters are still a rare sight...Only about 4,000, or 6.6%, of the 60,000 employees of JR East are women...Currently, about 1,500 women work for the company as station staff, and there are about 150 female drivers and about 600 female conductors. It is still rare, however, for women to become stationmasters, with only four women attaining the position before [the recent appointments of] Shirayama and Shimizu. Central Japan Railway Co. employs one female stationmaster works, and one is employed by Hokkaido Railway Co. When asked why only six women have become JR East stationmasters, a company official said, "The women who were hired after privatization haven't reached the age where they are eligible to become stationmasters....There'll be more female stationmasters in the future"...more...

Asakusa Rickshaw Legal Battle

Two Asakusa rickshaw operators are in a legal dispute over who has the right to wear happi coats with the 「雷」 (kaminari) kanji. Both companies work near Asakusa's famous Kaminarimon ("Thunder Gate") so the logo is a significant selling point. Ebisu Enterprise of Kyoto first used the design (shown above left) when they began offering rickshaw services in 2001 and officially registered it as a trademark last July. Yokohama-based Planes (プラネス) started in October 2009 and kitted out their staff with the happi coats you can see above right. Ebisu is asking the court to ban Planes from using the logo and is seeking 8 million yen damages.

Gov. Ishihara Calls For "Real Judo"
As the Judo World Championships kick off in Tokyo, Governor Ishihara has been giving his views on the sport. He says he hopes to see the real thing in Japan and criticized the standard of judo at the Beijing Olympics, calling it ugly and like "ニワトリのけんか" ("niwatori no kenka" - cock fighting) He said the ultimate skill in judo should be to score an ippon victory over your opponent, a reference to current rules which seem to favour the continuous accumulation of lesser points. He called for no time limits to bouts and offered to keep a venue open all night if necessary.

Fraudulent Fish Photo?

This just in from the "strange but probably true" files. Fisherman Raphael Biagini reeled in what is believed to be a 30-pound koi carp in France, where the fish are quite popular. The fish, a vivid orange, looks a great deal like a giant goldfish. The photo is several months old, but it's buzzing right now, thanks to an article from the U.K.'s Daily Mail. ....

Of course, some people may look at the photo and scream, "Fake!" And, indeed, the Web is full of stories of altered photos. However, from what we can tell, a fish this size and this color is possible. According to Ken Peterson, communications director at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, this isn't out of the realm of possibility. If a koi has the right amount of food and enough space to grow, he says, there's no telling how big they can get.

Indeed, koi carp have grown a lot bigger. John McCosker of the California Academy of Sciences points out that, according to FishBase.org, the largest koi on record weighed almost 90 pounds (like the orange fish, it was caught in France). ... (more)

Korean-American found dead in Tokyo

Hoon "Scott" Kang, 20, was vacationing in Tokyo with friends when he was found lying in an emergency stairwell with blood trickling from his left ear early on Aug. 27. He died three days later in a hospital, never having regained consciousness.

Japanese authorities initially concluded that he fell down the stairs accidentally. Kang's family believes he was a victim of something much more sinister. They learned Monday that Japanese police had reopened the investigation, at the prodding of the U.S. Embassy in Japan.

"They tried to say it was an accident," said his father, Sung Kang, 48, reached by phone Tuesday in South Korea, where he is visiting relatives. "But when I visited the police office and I saw the pictures of the accident area, I knew this was not an accident."

Police showed the Kang family a surveillance video from an elevator in the building that housed the restaurant where Scott Kang had stopped. The video shows Kang in the elevator shortly after 11 p.m. with a man in a black hat. Kang gestures with both hands out, as if to say "I don't have anything," and the man appears to punch Kang in the stomach, his father said.

His body was found around 1:30 a.m. in the stairwell between the sixth and seventh floors. He remained in a coma due to severe head trauma until his death Aug. 30.

A representative of the U.S. Embassy in Japan declined to talk about the case except to say it is the subject of an ongoing investigation.

The Kangs believe the Japanese authorities discriminated against them by not taking the case seriously. An article about Kang's death recently appeared in the Chosun Daily News, a Korean newspaper in Duluth.

Pastor Hang Soon Park of the Salt and Light Presbyterian Church said the congregation has held prayer vigils for the family. Kang's parents plan to return home from South Korea next week. Meanwhile, their qualms about the Japanese investigation linger.

Weeklies Go After Ozawa

Two weekly magazines will carry stories implicating Ichiro Ozawa and Diet member Ai Aoki in possible scandals. Shukan Bunshun says the pair dined at an exclusive Kyoto ryokan and claims to have pictures of them holding hands and Aoki "looking relaxed" in a yukata. Shukan Shincho's account is different. It says that Aoki spent the night in an Ibaraki hotel with a man, who checked in under an assumed name. and they identify him as Ozawa's secretary. The magazine approached the man, who is married with children, and he apparently said he has nothing to be ashamed of.

Japanese Author Nixes Typical J-Publisher Bureaucracy
From the WSJ
Ever since the arrival of the slim and snazzy electronic book devices, the magnates of the traditional publishing industry have feared the worst: that precious big-name authors might sign directly with e-book retailers, relegating the old-school publishers as the dispensable middleman.

Let the nightmare begin. Novelist Ryu Murakami plans to release his latest novel exclusively for digital bookworms through Apple Inc.’s iPad ahead of the print version. Mr. Murakami, the acclaimed author of over 15 novels including “Coin Locker Babies” and “In the Miso Soup”, replaced the publishers with a software company to help develop the e-book titled “A Singing Whale,” or “Utau Kujira” in Japanese. The digital package will include video content and set to music composed by Academy Award winning composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, according to the Japanese business daily Nikkei. The newspaper reports the e-book will cost 1,500 yen ($17) and will be ready to download pending Apple’s approval. More...
