great board you have here. I found out about this board through a coworker on my first day at work and have been lurking for about 6 months now.

Ive been very busy in the 6 months that Ive been here (living in the tokyo area, asakusa to be specific) and havent had much aimless wandering time.

There are and they are easy to find. Most read light districts there are actualy information boxes available. They are usualy run by a Yack but the Yacks that I have talked too are very friendly and can speak a little english. They will even give you discounts and tell you were to go that welcome Gaijin. A network is not physical access. You can do many things across a network, but there are many more that you can only do physically. Couple of examples:

1. With physical access you can take a bit-for-bit image of any or all disks in the system. With this image you can do the actual searching for the data you want anywhere and any time you wish. A bit-for-bit image will let you recover any recoverable-but-deleted files too.

2. If the attacker wants to log onto the machine but it is behind a secure firewall with no open vulnerabilities, doing it remotely requires luck and/or a lot of talent. It might not be possible even then. And even if the attacker does get in, they can't necessarily do *everything* that could be done locally. With physical access though it is a less than a 5 minute job to change the admin password of a Windows system to whatever you want. Log in, do what you need, log off. Then you can change the admin password back to what it was before. Yes, it really is that easy -- if you have local physical access.

As for encryption... Strong encryption does not make things easier. Strong encryption of all disks in the machine on a hardware level makes unauthorized local access about as difficult as it is possible to make it.

The jumper setting on the Dell motherboards is common to most motherboards. It drains the power that maintains the CMOS that holds the BIOS settings -- including any BIOS passwords. That is why I specifically said I was not talking about a BIOS password.

Again, I make no claims to know everything about computers or computer security. I probably know a little bit more than the average Joe, but not necessarily much more!
