Japan Today feature this site: http://www.nippop.com/

Finally, a decent English-language J-pop website (http://www.japantoday.com/e/?content=feature&id=854)
Google "J-pop" and you'll get a dozen or so websites devoted to Japanese popular music. There's certainly no lack of interest in the subject among English speakers, but too many of these websites seem to be hastily cobbled together fan sites, or devoted exclusively to hawking merchandize. Frustrated by the lack of information about Japanese music on the otherwise authoritative All Music Guide (allmusic.com), three foreign veterans of the Japanese entertainment industry recently got together to launch Nippop (nippop.com), which went online Jan 1.
American Keith Cahoon spent two decades as the CEO of Tower Records Japan before starting music publisher Hotwire; fellow countryman Bill Haw is the general manager at the Tokyo office of online Asian entertainment retailer YesAsia.com; while Canadian Steve McClure is known as the author of the book Nippon Pop as well as the Billboard Asia bureau chief.

"Nip" pop? Sounds just plain wrong... Yeah.. A little strange. Seems like one 'p' would be better. It would be 'Neepop', instead of 'Nip-pop'..

I went there when they first launched. the crew behind the site has impressive credentials, but overall I found the site to be totally dry and uninteresting. I think this is one of those cases where the guys have gotten too old or too battle weary to really keep in step with 1)japanese music trends, 2)engaging web content.

even the name hints that they are too "down" "old school" and "in the know" to offer anything fresh. a lot of people aren't going to catch the nippon reference in nippop. nice play on words, but ultimately, not a hot name.

I've just taken a look at the site too and I have to agree with jim katta. There are a lot of profiles of acts who are no longer performing (e.g. Cocco, Seagull Screaming Kiss Her Kiss Her, Super Junky Monkey, Pizicatto Five, Feed, Blankey Jet City, Cibo Matto, Judy and Mary, Love Tambourines and Number Girl) which makes everything feel a bit dated. And there is no discography yet which I would have thought was fairly fundamental for such a site even if it is still evolving.
Anyway, I'll keep an eye on it in case it picks up speed.

Well they just began, the idea behind the site is not bad. But yes it 's not very "rock n'roll" but it seems that they primary goal is to make a database not a news site. That maybe explains why it 's especially unsexy.
The only other decent site i used to visit on the subject was musicwhore.org (http://www.musicwhore.org) but it's not japan only. Still his database his nice, got me initiated in some "mainstream" stuff i had no idea about (like number girl, supercar, shina ringo and the likes)

http://www.rockofjapan.com/ has some interesting bits and bobs too.
