View Full Version : Can URLs be racist?

Ok, I know this is fuckedgaijin.com, but recently I've been finding an awful lot of ".../japthis.htm" and ".../japthat.jpg" on the web lately. Is this unintentional subliminal racism, Freudian slippery, or simple thoughtlessness? Should people be more sensitive when naming their urls and image files?

Yes, I think subliminal racism is evident in urls and files with "Jap" in the title. THis is especially evident in the porn sites with titles like "Horny Jap Sluts Doing the Nasty" and stuff like that. Either the site operator is racist or the audience they're trying to appeal to an audience with racist perceptions of Japanese (or Asian) women. I guess if you equate the word "Jap" with the other familiar racist words for other ethnicities (as I do), then it's a given that such url's exhibit a latent racism as well.

My wife call's my penis hole a "Japs eye",
She call's herself "a little Jap."
JAP/GAIJIN... who bloody cares....everyone has derogatory names for people of even the slightest difference of themself.
EG Limey, Pom, Yank, Septic Tank, Crow Eater, Sheep Fucker, Pointy Head, Chink, Slope, Russky, Kraut,
Let's evolve....shall we?

I'm wasn't really talking about porn sites (kamome, you seem to be quite an expert in that area), but that's a good point too. Deliberate racism is something unavoidable, due to that certain asshead percentage of the genepool, but...
What bothers me are sites which have people's travel photos - people who seem like they are trying to show a positive view on their Japan experiences, but then they name their pages "jappics1.html", "japtrip.jpg" , "japdinner" , etc. It just seems doubly thoughtless to me. Someone who is trying to show Japan in a positive light and share their experiences (and even to promote cultural understanding), but then their site is full of "japs". I'm just saying THINK before you name that file!

Well, hen na.. Japs are allowed to call themselves Japs because they're Japs and we're not. On the other hand, we're allowed to call ourselves filthy foreign barbarians all we want, but most of us take offensive when the Japanese call us that.
Personally, even though I think PCness sometimes gets out of hand, I try to avoid using "Jap" as shorthand for Japanese. On the other hand, I do have a section on my site called "niptopia".. but's supposed to essentially sarcastic.

:D OK, that is funny. But I'd have to see the context it's used in before I know whether I should feel guilty about laughing or not. :winkb:

I totally disagree with this kind of attitude. Language evokes meaning, and meaning manifests intent. If the intent behind such words is hateful or subtly racist, then we shouldn't take a "who cares" approach to it. Instead, we should at least expose it and show disapproval lest people become too cavalier in their usage of ignorant terms like "Jap". I think a "who cares" approach basically just amounts to a kind of laziness or indifference.

Have you noticed that this site is called "Fucked Gaijin?
Do you think that implies that we are the sort of people who engage in high brow discussion on the finer complexities of boring , already overdone, issues of racial importance?
Shit no dude, we are "fucked gaijin", after all.
Maybe you are better suited to "Japan-Today",
or some other "clever" website.

Unfortunately, there isn't a whole lot on there right now. But eventually I want it to be just my section on some of the weirder things I've noticed about Japan.

Hey, this site is for free discussion concerning gaijin who have lived, or currently live, in Japan. As far as I know, it can be high brow or low brow. If you find this topic boring or overdone, then why are you even participating in the first place?
Maybe you are better suited to "Japan-Today", or some other "clever" website.
What's with the attitude? Maybe you should keep comments like that to yourself. I don't tell you where to post your thoughts.

I'm sorry, I mistakenly assummed this site might of been the last refuge away from the rest of the politically correct moral majority dribble on the net.

drivel even...
Sorry, but we're so Fucked that we don't even have minimum standards of Fucked-upedness. We let fractionally Fucked and non-Fucked Gaijin mingle (at their own peril) with the Really Fucked Gaijin. Chaos ensues!

Was I dribbling? I didn't notice, because I was LMAO.

Very cool concept. But I'm wondering who the fractionally fucked, the non-fucked, and the really fucked are. Am I fractionally or totally fucked? I'm thinking "totally".

It's simple really. All you have to do is look at the number of solid Kirin bottles below your name. Obviously, unregistered posters are only semi-Fucked.
