A (Japanese) girlfriend asked me to let her (European) fiance stay in my four-room apartment until he found his feet. Being a generous soul, I agreed. I figured that it would be a couple of weeks. Actually this guy freeloaded off me for three whole months. He was broke - idiotic enough to arrive in Japan with no proper visa, no money, and no job skills to speak of except possibly as a Castillian language teacher - and therefore couldn't afford to contribute anything towards household expenses. He was also severely hygienically-challenged, and seemed to believe that bathrooms and kitchens were self-cleaning. Ugh. The stench of his obnoxious cologne! The dishes piled up in the sink! The dirty clothes left lying around! The worst thing of all was the mess he made of my toilet. How can a person 'miss' so consistently? And furthermore, how can a person not notice his own 'missing?' I mean, c'mon, it was all over the floor. Every single day. For three miserable months.
Anyway, to cut a long story short, I have since moved into a 1LDK just so that I'll have a reason to refuse future houseguests. Seriously. And my friend (yes, we're still friends) has since married that man, and now all she does when we're together is complain about what a slob he is, not to mention his distressing lack of a work ethic.
Mwah-ha-ha-ha! Sweet revenge.
Oh yeah, the moral of the story is: don't be a pushover. And don't let anyone stay in your house without making them sign something first (doesn't apply to pets).
