This earlier thread (http://www.fuckedgaijin.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3787) about the same issue is over 2 years old but some of the information - especially Taro's - may still be good. I've tended to wait until I'm overseas but that doesn't sound like an option for you.

I heard good things about this dentist. She speaks English and also posts the non-subsidized rates on her homepage. Very clear explanations on procedures etc.

Nothing to do with Japan, but intersting all the same:

Falling numbers of state dentists in England has led to some people taking extreme measures, including extracting their own teeth, according to a new study released Monday. Others have used superglue to stick crowns back on, rather than stumping up for private treatment, said the study. One person spoke of carrying out 14 separate extractions on himself with pliers.
More typically, a lack of publicly-funded dentists means that growing numbers go private: 78 percent of private patients said they were there because they could not find a National Health Service (NHS) dentist, and only 15 percent because of better treatment.

Also, nothing to do with Japan. Ain't national health care great? Makes you just want to run out and vote for Hillary and make the US Health plans like the UK and Canada.
