View Full Version : Japanese PC in Australia
I have posted this on other forums... sorry for the duplication!
Ok, so I have the reverse situation to most people posting here.
I have a Japanese laptop (a vaio I bought a couple of years ago). In August I have to go back to Oz for about three weeks to do some field work, visit a few libraries etc in order to finish my long suffering PhD by December.
Here's the question...
What do I need to use my Laptop in Australia? Do I just stick another cord into my existing transformer since it says it can handle input of up to 240V and 50-60hz? Australia as far as I know uses 230V 50hz.
This should be ok, right? Any thoughts? Anyone out there done this or know about it?

Here's a good page for info: Electricity Around the World (http://users.pandora.be/worldstandards/electricity.htm#adapters) http://users.pandora.be/worldstandards/images/moving%20cogwheels.gif
In short, Oz uses 240V & 50Hz
My Sony video camera and Samsung mobile chargers also say they can handle both Japanese and Oz electricity, and they do, without a transformer. The only thing I need is a plug adapter so that they will match the wall socket. You should be able to pick one of those up for anywhere between 200 and 1,000 yen at a denkiya or, if desperate, at the airport.
Good luck with the PhD.

I would suggest getting a AC cable to run from the transformer to the wall instead of using an adapter. Adapters are usually cheaply made and often don't have a good contact.
I bought cables in Korea and Singapore real cheap. Look for an Akihabara (Yonsan, Sim Lim Tower) type store and they usually have cables in the bargain or junk box for sale cheap .
Thanks for all the info and the support for the PhD. I am just trying to get the bloody thing out of my hair after what feels like forever - which is not to say I'm not enjoying it being in the hair!
Since I live near Nagoya, I'll head down to Aichiken's very own (smaller) Akihabara, Osu and see if I can pick up a lead that goes from my brick to an Aussie outlet. Failing that, I'll see if I can pick one up in oz over the net before I go.
Just got an email from Sony in Australia who said I just need to whack an adaptor on the end of the cord and everything should be cool. Bewt!
