Dubbed versions are necessary for a hit in Japan. (http://www.asahi.com/english/culture/K2002042400393.html)

Twenty years ago, there was only a subtitled version of ``E.T.-The Extra-terrestrial.'' However, for the 20th anniversary version to open in Japanese theaters from April 27, half of the copies to be shown will be dubbed.

Although subtitled copies are still the mainstream in rental video shops, officials of Tsutaya Co., the largest chain, said that especially in their rural outlets, dubbed versions are more popular than subtitled copies.

Hicks like dubbed versions.

Nice to know that the Japanese can be just as lazy and dimwitted as Americans.

Well, the bad thing is, they are becoming that way. They used to have more films (most films) subtitled, but now things are moving towards the lowest common denominator. Tokyo definitely has a wider range of foreign films than any city in the US (which isn't saying much), but now they're in danger of becoming foreign films for illiterates.
