So I read up all the forums here and gather the final courage needed to begin my careful descent into the Eikaiwa applications because JET has always sounded too horrible, even way back as an attempting exchange student.

I was going to take a shot at ECC and they hit me up with a bachelor requirement.
I have the experience of teaching art and English but shit, this sucks.
That would mean I'd have to wait another 2/3 years to finish up a degree in Testicle Evaluation.

Do they all require a bachelor's degree for application?

I am hoping there are some that don't.

But the ones that don't are going to ask me to go for an interview in Japan, I suppose because they probably don't have the money to help me out with a ticket.

I'm starting to think my chances are only going to be greater if I lived there first.
I hope I will not get caught up in imported sekuhara either.

Since NOVA collapsed, eikaiwa schools have found themselves with a fairly ready pool of teachers available at the same time as customers have been a bit more cautious at signing up to lengthy contracts. Other members of this board have more first hand knowledge but I would think this means that they have less of a need to try to bend the rules. Depending on how old you are, you could try getting a working holiday visa (http://www.fuckedgaijin.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16685).

Without a working holiday visa (not for USA young people), spouse visa, etc., not having bachelor's degree makes getting your first job as a teacher a bitch.
Yes, yes, there are all sorts of scams to get around the general rule of no-degree-no-teaching-job, but ain't worth the trouble...especially now that the streets are filled with 4,000 ex-Nova teachers literally willing to work for food.

A bit trivia for you. One of the reasons the four year degree requirement was added as a policy (not a law), occurred way back before the so-called "Entertainer’s Visa. A large number of the whores were imported (believe it or not) as eikaiwa teachers where they supposedly taught English in their respective bars/clubs (I suppose in between tricks). The Entertainer's visa was supposed to stop all of that and control who was actually an entertainer versus your routine hooker. We all know how well that worked. They added the college degree requirement to certain visa categories in attempts to further close that gap and preclude these poor working girls from earning a living in Uncle Taro's butt plug.

Not that it matters for you, since unless things have changed, I thought JET also requires a bachelor's degree, but what is so "horrible" about JET?

There's not a huge difference between what you would be doing on JET as an ALT and what you would be doing working as an eikaiwa teacher, except that the odds are you would be in a better, safer position, more coddled and make more money as a JET?

I was more joking when I said "too horrible".

I wanted to take a shot at Eikaiwa first because it felt like I would have a more personal expirience if I tried out and ended up accepting the oppurtunity and that is something I value a bit more than cozyness to a certain level.

If nothing else was left, sure I'd try JET.
I just put it on the bottom of my list because it seemed less friendly and more ruining of the expirience from what I have read, but I would take a chance to find out.

I have worked in eikaiwa and as a non-JET ALT and, in my opinion, ALT jobs are a lot better.
I think JET pays a lot better than most eikaiwas and it's my general impression that you get treated like something closer to a human being.

With JET you would have evenings and weekends off but eikaiwas will make their slaves work these hours as these are the times the students come.

Of course I don't know what hours you would want to work, but it can be hard to hang out with the natives when you are working when they are off.

JET would probably also give you enough free time to have your own private students, study, pursue hobbies, etc.

I would definitely go for JET over eikaiwa.

Then there are the case-by-case perks which you may or may not get depending on where you are posted. These can include free rent, free car, summers off, having your office pay all of your taxes for you (essentially a several thousand dollar a year bonus) etc. etc.

I'd also say that there is a better chance of having a good experience on JET than working for a regular eikaiwa since the regular eikaiwas tend to view their teachers more as a replaceable commodity than JET host institutions, where it is quite difficult for the host institution to get rid of you even if they want to, you are able to renew your contract up to 4 years and because of the 異動 (idou) system in place in most government offices the whole "seeing JETs as a temporary fixture who will soon leave just like the many before them" syndrome is actually less common than a lot of people believe (or would have you believe) because for many of your co-workers it will be their first time working with a JET.

You also get to work in actual schools, which provides you with a much better "built-in" chance to participate in the local community than working at an Eikaiwa business, etc. etc.

And the pay is about 12man (US$1,113) a month better than the vast majority of eikaiwas.

Of course, if you are wanting to live in Tokyo, then JET just isn't an option.
