Telegraph: Japan in grip of blood type obsession (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/japan/3547109/Japan-in-grip-of-blood-type-obsession.html)
Japan is in the grip of a blood type obsession, with an increasing sector of the population subscribing to the theory that blood types determine every aspect of personality, temperament and interaction with others. Testimony to the nation's love affair with blood type analysis are four books analysing the subject which have occupied places in Japan's top ten best seller lists for the past year. It emerged today that more than 5 million copies of a series of books based on Instruction Manual for People with Type B Blood appealing in particular to women in their twenties and thirties - have reportedly been bought so far this year...more... (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/japan/3547109/Japan-in-grip-of-blood-type-obsession.html)

By what logic is this evidence of an increasing belief in blood type personality analysis? Here's effectively the same article in the Guardian (http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008/dec/04/japan-world-news)

Being B+, I find this statement somewhat questionable as nothing under 50 has even looked in my direction in month, unless I have promised to buy her a mansion and make mass transfers of cash to her bank account.

I can never remember my blood type. It seems the fact that I do not know it is of great amazement to Japanese.

Of course if I ever need a transfusion I would hope the hospital would test me rather than taking my word for it.

The history of the blood type fad is interesting ... and dark.

The Nazis used the differences in blood type distribution between races to justify their claim of racial supremacy. Knowing Japan's admiration for Nazi policies at the time, it's reasonable to assume that there may be a connection.

Apparently Takeji Furukawa's study that introduced the theories to Japan was commissioned by the militarist government in an attempt to find a way to breed more aggressive soldiers. His "study," however, involved a pathetically small sample group (estimated to have been between 10 and 20 people), and the whole thing is basically untenable.

Of course that hasn't stopped people from making small fortunes off the gullibility of the general public.

I have no idea what my blood type is. I tend to ask drunk friends what they think my blood type is as their BAC tends to get them to reveal more about what they think about me.....and as a result.....I'm a very sad person.:violin:

I don't know my blood type. My absolute favorite response to Japanese people asking about my blood-type is to ask them to guess. Of course, I tell them they are wrong regardless of how they guess.

The fact that not a few of Japanese believe blood type divination proves that most of Japanese brains still are pre-modern.
If you deny blood type divination in Japanese internet forums, you will see many non-rational and hysterical responses.
I have been said "You are ABSOLUTELY B type dayo!!!!" at every opportunity.
But I am A.

I have no idea what my blood type is which as Bucky mentioned above always causes total disbelief. (I usually just answer "red" or sometimes "warm".)

As outrageous as he usually is, I am forced to occasionally agree with Take-poo. This blood-type crap can, and I'm sure often has, hurt people, and it's been hot in Japan for a long long time.

No problem for me, as a type O, I generally scare them into submission. :ninja2:

When I was teaching in the US I had a student from Korea that was studying at the police university in Seoul. A discussion about this came up and I said it was all BS and only Japanese and Korean people cared about it. She said that there were scientific studies done by the South Korean police that proved blood type was a legitimate way to determine personality type. What a crock o' shit.

Can Blood Type Determine Your Personality? (http://www.divinecaroline.com/article/32649/62479-blood-type-determine-personality-)

The history of the theory that blood type determines personality is actually a dark one. In 1900, Austrian scientist Karl Landsteiner discovered the four blood types. Like 19th-century scientists who used brain size (the larger the brain, the more advanced) to propagate theories of racial and gender superiority, many (white) scientists used the blood type theory as a way to push forward their own ideas of racial supremacy. Scientists from the west suggested (falsely, obviously) that Asians were inferior and sub-human since the vast majority of them\like animals\had type B blood. In 1927, Takeji Furukawa, a Japanese professor, introduced the theory to the Japanese public in a paper entitled, gThe Study of Temperament Through Blood Type.h Even though he lacked the proper credentials and backed up nothing scientifically, the public embraced the idea of blood type as a determination of personality. The Japanese government even commissioned a study to determine if they could breed better soldiers. In the 1970s, a book by Masahiko Nomi revived the idea, which is still popular with the general Japanese public. In 2008, four books on the topic have hit Japanfs top ten bestseller lists.

Blood type analysis in Japan is quite common, but it seems to me as an equivalent to our western astrology. Most people some kind of believe in it, and a few people respect it very much.

It seems there is nothing there that says current Japan is pre-modern.

au contraire, blood types can and do change - one notable cause being bone marrow transplants where the donor type differs from the recipient's, the recipient's blood type will eventually change. a liver transplant has also been known to induce such changes.

New kidney 'changed my whole personality' (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/1581752/New-kidney-%27changed-my-whole-personality%27.html)

A woman claims to have undergone a complete "personality transplant" after receiving a new kidney.

Cheryl Johnson, 37, says she has changed completely since receiving the organ in May. She believes that she must have picked up her new characteristics from the donor, a 59-year-old man who died from an aneurysm.

Now, not only has her personality changed, the single mother also claims that her tastes in literature have taken a dramatic turn. Whereas she only used to read low-brow novels, Dostoevsky has become her author of choice since the transplant. ..more.. yeah, there is definitely anecdotal evidence of personalities changing with organ donations. instances of people's food preferences and temperaments changing to reflect those of the donor. that it happens at all is fascinating and definitely lends credence to the whole being more than the sum of its parts.

Can Blood Type Determine Your Personality?
http://www.divinecaroline.com/article/32649/62479-blood-type-determine-personality-/2
.. What Your Blood Type Says About Your Personality

Type O
You are the social butterflies. Often popular and self-confident, you are very creative and always seem to be the center of attention. You make a good impression on people and youfre often quite attractive. Organized and determined, your stubbornness will help you reach your goals. You make good leaders. Lovewise, O is most compatible with O and AB. Common career choices: banker, politician, gambler, minister, investment broker, and pro athlete.

Type A
Type As may seem calm on the outside, but inside, youfre filled with anxiety and worry. Youfre perfectionists and often shy and sensitive. Usually introverted, youfre stable and thoughtful. You make good listeners and are sensitive to color and your surroundings. You like to be fashionable and are up on the latest trends, but never flashy or gaudy. You like romantic settings and often shun reality for fantasy worlds. A is most compatible with A and AB in the love department. Common career choices: accountant, librarian, economist, writer, computer programmer, and gossip columnist.

Type B
You can be very goal-oriented and often complete the ambitious tasks set before you. Outgoing and very charming, youfre good at reading people and providing support. Though critical of appearance (but not your own), you arenft picky and are unlikely to dwell over the little things. Type Bs are impulsive individualists who often create their own path in life. You are very strong and optimistic. B is most compatible with B and AB lovers. Common career choices: cook, hairdresser, military leader, talk show host, and journalist.

Type AB
Not surprisingly, ABs can be quite dualistic, possessing both A and B traits. You may be shy and outgoing, and hesitant and confident. You often stand out from others, donft like labels, and are nice and easy going. You are logical and determined to do things correctly. Usually trustworthy, you like to help others. You often speak in a serious manner. Your patience, concentration, and intelligence are admirable. AB can find a soul mate with any other blood type. Common career choices: bartender, lawyer, teacher, sales representative, and social worker...:p

One of the comments was interesting..
Considering the practice started as no more than as a WWII Japanese experiment to breed better soldiers, I'm not sure what the relevance or newsworthiness of this article happens to be. If such a bizarre practice emerged from the holocaust would you consider reporting it?Is this true?..

TOKYO – In Japan, "What's your type?" is much more than small talk; it can be a paramount question in everything from matchmaking to getting a job.
By type, the Japanese mean blood type, and no amount of scientific debunking can kill a widely held notion that blood tells all.
In the year just ended, four of Japan's top 10 best-sellers were about how blood type determines personality, according to Japan's largest book distributor, Tohan Co. The books' publisher, Bungeisha, says the series \ one each for types B, O, A, and AB \ has combined sales of well over 5 million copies.
Taku Kabeya, chief editor at Bungeisha, thinks the appeal comes from having one's self-image confirmed; readers discover the definition of their blood type and "It's like 'Yes, that's me!'"
As defined by the books, type As are sensitive perfectionists but overanxious; Type Bs are cheerful but eccentric and selfish; Os are curious, generous but stubborn; and ABs are arty but mysterious and unpredictable.
All that may sound like a horoscope, but the public doesn't seem to care.
Even Prime Minister Taro Aso seems to consider it important enough to reveal in his official profile on the Web. He's an A. His rival, opposition leader Ichiro Ozawa, is a B.
Nowadays blood type features in a Nintendo DS game and on "lucky bags" of women's accessories tailored to blood type and sold at Tokyo's Printemps department store. A TV network is set to broadcast a comedy about women seeking husbands according to blood type.
