Sorry, if you can't see the page by pointing your browser to http://www.fuckedgaijin.com/forum/imode.php , then you're out of luck. But actually, the "imode" page isn't really imode, so it may be possible to see on some J-Phone models.

See this thread for some discussion of the topic: Viewing from i-mode phone (http://www.fuckedgaijin.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2149)

Sorry to nit-pick BB.. but WAP is not i-mode or J-SKY. You seem quite knowledgable on Windows stuff and I have actually learned from your posts - thank you from a Windows allergic Mac user. I just wanted to return the favour.

i-mode is the registered name used by NTT DoCoMo for their mobile internet service which primarily uses cHTML (plus some extra goodies). cHTML is a subset of regular HTML. (note that often i-mode is a sometimes coined as the generic term for all Japanese mobile internet services)

J-Phone has J-Sky which is the equivalent of i-mode and uses cHTML as well but handles graphics slightly differently.

EZ-web is the AU mobile internet service that is a WAP service. The markup language is different in that there is WML, HDML and xHTML. xHTML is backward compatable. The latest version of WAP is 2.0 (xHTML) and is now in the newer models of AU handsets. The older phones use HDML etc.

As you can see, WAP is very different and a heap harder to program for WAP and the user experience is inferior, however, it is good to know the distinction especially with phones "goin' global" this year. We need to educate the rest of the world how good the Japanese model is working for users and content providers alike...

Gomigirl,
That post educated me about the different protocols for each phone. I have noticed I can get on sites like http://www.google.com , http://www.ebay.com etc.. on my Jphone without a problem. I wish I knew what coding they were using on their site to allow my j-phone to work.

Now I can see why I can't get on some sites that say WAP enabled. I wished every phone could stick to one standard.. would make web designing for mobile phones much easier..

I tried getting on the FG site using the IMODE.php addy.. no luck, got a http 404 error.. :( Using the J-PHONE J-NM01 by NOKIA.

Another reason I am asking is because a site I am an admin on another site and we are wanting to deploy Mobile coding for users to be able to post, view etc...

ANy ideas on setting this up to hit the largest target audience? Any ideas on what coding Google, ebay and the like use? They work fine with my Jphone. Considering getting that new FOMA phone.. but I might wait and get a PDA/Mobile AIO phone instead.

Google and ebay have built i-mode sites. So that even if you point your phone browser to the regular url, their servers recognise that you are coming in from a phone browser and push the appropriate content.

I remember that on this list (http://www.appelsiini.net/keitai-l/archives/) that somebody from google was testing the site when it was first built.. I did a quick archive search but couldn't find it. It was about 2 years ago. This is THE list for mobile geeks like me..

Now I can see why I can't get on some sites that say WAP enabled. I wished every phone could stick to one standard.. would make web designing for mobile phones much easier..

But where is the challenge?? just kidding.. it is tough to make sure that everything is set up correctly and even with the same carrier the handsets are different - eg screen width, dithering, no of colours supported etc etc etc.

I tried getting on the FG site using the IMODE.php addy.. no luck, got a http 404 error.. :( Using the J-PHONE J-NM01 by NOKIA.

I think that Ultra made the imode.php for imode phones. I have no problem on my docomo handsets, but only a few of the j-phone handsets are supported - this will be due to the way that graphics are handled..

Check out the Keitai-L list for some hints on that. But also be aware, that since I have been checking FG on my phone, my packet fees have skyrocketed.. I am a big mobile user anyway, but as this site is really best viewed from a desktop. Mobile sites really need to be lean and mean. Very small white space, minimal graphics etc etc.

I was impressed that ULTRA bothered to make one for this site given that it is a non-commercial site. It would have taken alot of work on his part to do it.

I have heaps and heaps and heaps of ideas.. but BB this is what I do for a living and so there is only so much info that I give away for free on a public board. A girl needs to eat!! I know that seems mercenary but I wouldn't ask anybody else to work for free... if this is a commercial site then perhaps you need some consulting. PM me and we can have a chat.

No, sorry to say, it wasn't really done with any protocols in mind. It's just stripped-down versions of the main site pages squeezed into a sort-of mobile phone screen size. I wanted to strip out all the images and emoticons, but I couldn't figure it out.

So, how much would you charge to help me pick out a new phone? Are you current on all the latest 1 Yen models?

Works well.. after posting something from a phone it then tries to send me to the top FG desktop page but I think it works really well. There are compression engines and perl scripts that can be used to strip down a site... but it is really good the way it is.

Price to suggest a new phone - (and a special deal for you) nothing!!!

Don't know about pricing or plans - but ask me about handset features - no sweat!! (P.s. am really bad on the camera side of things.. as I have no idea about photography.. )

Thanks for the tips thus far. I just tried the FG site again.. and now all I see is my damn penguin rotating the globe over and over and the internet status bar goes baout 4 blocks out of 7 and stops.. I left it set for about 10 minutes... and nada :( then it says connection interupted no response.

The site we are working on, unfortunately is non-commerical. It is a hobby a few of us have in helping users with the technical problems and issues with personal computing. I am just now learning the mobile aspect of webpage design... I know now the future phone I purchase will be docomo, even though I really don't want to go that route :p

Jphones rock IMHO, but I want to be compatible. Guess it is like the apple vs PC thing.

Reviewed any PDA mobile enabled devices lately? What are your thoughts on those devices in general?

It sends you to a "your message has been posted" page, then should forward you to back to the stripped-down thread page. I think I had a problem re-formatting that "message has been posted page" for some reason.

:D Thanks, I'll try to narrow things down then get back to you if I have any questions before I make my final selection of the ultimate 1 Yen phone.
