Can anyone suggest a site or store that has cheap but good condition monitors. I am up in Aomori, so getting to Tokyo, Akihabara, is not that easy. 15 or 17 inch, although 17 is preferable. Thanks for the help.

In akihabara there is a place near the station with a big NEC sign on the top, got to the 5 floor and you will find NEC first point. Where they sell second hand monitors. I got a 19 inch for 4000 yen. they had a 21inch but i didnt feel like carrying it. Besides I will throw mine away after a year.
I know this thread is a year old lol...

Get an LCD if you can afford it. The power savings alone will pay great dividends in the end. Also they are better for the environment (use less material by mass) and a better for your eyes. :D
I got a 90000 yen Mitsubishi Diamondcrysta RD model and love every minute of it.
You can get a 17inch no brand over the internet LCD for about 40000 yen:
NACO 17TFT
17インチTFT液晶/1280×1024(SXGA)対応/スピーカー内蔵
\39,880 (税別)

and a 15inch for about 30000 yen:
The link below is just information on the 15 inch LCD:

I am a heavy game player, and although i use a vey nice LCD at work I just cant come around to buying one for myself. First on my budget is usualy a graphics card. CRT has far better support for higher refresh rates.
But have you seen the 21 and 24 inch wide screen apple setups, I would fucking love onw I wonder if the DVI is compatible with standard IMB PC DVI outputs. But I wont be able to get drivers.

Yah,
if you are a gamer I suppose a CRT would be better.. but I too game (though not maniac style) and I can say that my 18 inch LCD is far sweeter than the old 17inch CRT i had even with lower referesh rates.
And I am saving money by using the LCD. It also as DVI output and my graphics card has the input.. divx, games, etc.. look spectacular!
it's just the money factor.. CRT are so much cheaper than LCDs..
