Murakami's 'Hiropon' sculpture fetches $380,000 in N.Y. (http://www.japantoday.com/e/?content=news&cat=1&id=215828)

''Hiropon,'' a fiberglass sculpture by Japanese artist Takashi Murakami created from Japanese animation image of long-legged girls with glistening, oversized eyes fetched $380,000 in an auction at the Christie's auction house on Wednesday.
Murakami, a popular post-modern artist whose work derives mostly from the Japanese ''otaku'' (geek) culture, completed the 2.2-meter high sculpture in 1997 -- a barely dressed young girl with oversized breasts, milk spraying forth in a gigantic loop.
It's ART, man.

Takashi Murakami's works to come as candy freebies (http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/game/docs/20031008/takara.htm)
Miniaturized modern works of art are now free -- with the purchase of two pieces of chewing gum for 350 yen. The gum-and-figurine boxes are a collaboration between artist Takashi Murakami and toy maker Takara Co. There are 10 figurines in the collection designed by Murakami, one in each pack. They include cartoonlike animals with dopey round eyes and mushrooms with eyeballs. The high-brow gum hits convenience stores Dec. 8; only 300,000 packs will be sold.
Murakami, who believes art should be part of mass culture, says he's excited about children buying his work in a box of candy. "The fact that art will infiltrate the masses is revolutionary in the history of art," he said. Murakami has scored international success with his energetic artwork, some of it evocative of "manga" comics, and for his commercial work, such as colorful bag designs for Louis Vuitton. Candy sold with toys, such as manga characters or models of cars, has become wildly popular in Japan, even among adults.

Methinks the artist has spent way too many hours alone with erotic manga.. he needs to get out more.

With on ly 30,000 sets being produced, I imagine these will become collectors' items. J-list will sell the full set with a massive markup, and they'll getch good money on eBay too.

murakami is certainly a nice guy and his art (yes, it is art, even if you don't understand it. nobody said "art"'s definition is simple) is ok, but his biggest problem is that he doesn't DO it.
he has ideas and draws drafts. then his army of "assistant" monkeys do the stuff. very corporate like. the sculptures are made by sculptors, according to his drafts. then someone else colors it.

Good point. I went to the guy's website to check out his other "art". That's some sadistic shit. And the reviews don't convince me that it's good as art or otherwise. Well, I'm a 1st amendment absolutist, so I'm no proponent of censorship - but speaking as a consumer, why would anyone buy this stuff?

interview with Trevor Brown (http://home.online.no/~janbruun/writings/trevorbrown-interview.html)
So, tell me Trevor, why are Japanese women better?
Barely needs answering! My choice. What do you want me to say - they have tighter pussies? - they'll submit to being tied up and beaten black'n'blue?
Where does this interest in drawing woman-bashing come from?
I can't remember ever drawing a picture of 'woman bashing'. I'm not a misogynist at all. Men are far more despicable. I'm interested in pleasure! My artwork is fully consensual - if the girls have bruises it's because they wanted them and are happy with them. For me it's aesthetic, it accentuates the beauty of the girl and creates more intense sympathetic feelings of affection and love. Other people, i am sure, will come to their own conclusions. If someone makes a pro woman abuse interpretation i suspect this says more about the state of their minds than my artwork. Same applies to people who immediately get indignant and start acting like moral guardians (most often with unbelievable hypocrisy). For the record, before too many more sexist accusations are directed at me, i should add that i have a large percentage of female admirers of my work.

This Trevor Brown is an ass. Oh, if someone criticizes his "art" or perceives a misogynistic theme in it, then the critic must have mental problems or is a hypocrite? How convenient for him! Where's the basis for that statement?
Like I said, I would never advocate censorship, but I would hope that the market rejects his work as crap. Just for the record, I like edgy artwork that deals with difficult or controversial themes (Mapplethorpe's photography, for example) but Trevor Brown's stuff just doesn't rise to that level IMO.

Japan pop artists Versailles show sparks protests
AFP –- 2010 Aug 30
VERSAILLES, France -- (http://anonym.to/?http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5jlOkGlauaiDKmOtik6w5EhNJ7Ddg)A show of outlandish sculptures by a cult Japanese artist in the historic Chateau of Versailles near Paris has enraged traditionalists who say it dishonours Frances past.
....eye-grabbing multicoloured statues in silver, fibreglass and metal by Takashi Murakami alongside the chateaus ornate murals and chandeliers.
"The Chateau de Versailles is one of the greatest symbols of Western history," Murakami said in a statement on the museums website.
"The Versailles of my imagination... has become a kind of completely separate and unreal world," he added. "That is what I have tried to depict in this exhibition."
Versailles enthusiasts however branded it an outrage to their beloved museum in the posh Paris suburb...
....Murakami has a global cult following, but his brash, colourful style and sometimes gleefully obscene subject matter are not to everyone's taste.
The 47-year-old artist's work evokes the look of "manga" comic books, perhaps most famously in the 1997 statue Hiropon, which depicts a large-chested girl skipping over a "rope" of spurting breast milk.
In another sculpture, "My Lonesome Cowboy", a naked young man finds a novel use for his own semen...more... (http://anonym.to/?http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5jlOkGlauaiDKmOtik6w5EhNJ7Ddg)

A sculpture by Japanese artist Takashi Murakami entitled “Kaikai” is displayed at Versailles palace, outside Paris, September 9. The piece is part of an exhibition by Mr. Murakami that brings cartoon behemoths, child-sized figurines and a flower-patterned carpet to Versailles, better known for works of art like the Hall of Mirrors constructed under the supervision of Louis XIV, the “Sun King”. The exhibition opens Sept. 14 and runs until Dec. 12.

BBC: Aristocrat's anger at Versailles Murakami 'manga' show (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-11615040)
A French aristocrat descended from Louis XIV is seeking a court order to stop a Japanese artist exhibiting his work at the Palace of Versailles. Work by Takashi Murakami, who blends Japanese classical art with manga-style modernity, is on show until December. But Prince Sixte-Henri de Bourbon-Parme believes Murakami's brightly coloured work dishonours the memory of his ancestors. The prince and fellow protesters say Murakami "denatures" French culture. "By exhibiting at Versailles, artists benefit from an added value," he told the AFP news agency. "We're not against the modernity of art but against a way of thinking that denatures and does French culture no good," the prince said...The Bourbon-Parme dynasty fought once before against an art exhibition at Versailles. In 2008 Prince Sixte-Henri's nephew, Prince Charles-Emmanuel de Bourbon-Parme, sought to ban a show by US sculptor Jeff Koons, but failed in the courts....more... I'm not much of an art person, but even I can tell his fiberglass shit work is more suited to one of those neutral modern art places with whitewashed walls, rooflights and an Ikea floor than a world heritage site where people go to immerse themselves in classical goodness.
It is doing nobody any favors... Versailles looks bad for hosting it, and his art looks just more like the provocateur fiberglass shit that everyone who gives two shits about good art thinks it is. In 100 years nobody will remember this guy.

Each generation of artist, having to compete first with photography, then film, and now electronic media, has to dream up something weirder than the previous generation.
Impressionism -> Cubism -> Surrealism -> Abstractionism -> . . . -> Installationism [a.k.a. Take a dump on a canvas ism] -> Whateverism
Novelty for the sake of novelty and shock value has become the overriding criteria.
