Hey guys, if you're going to do Japanese text input in something like Photoshop, do you need to have the Japanese version of Photoshop installed? Or would that work with an English version of Photoshop installed on a Japanese OS?
Also, what's a good way to just generate content in Japanese for a website? I usually go at content development just by loging on to the server, and going at a html document with some text editor, namely vi. These console based programs don't do Japanese though... do they?
What does one do to get Japanese content on the web anyway... do you have to create it in Word or something and do the save as html stuff?
Hrm.

You ARE lazy. You're never going to make Yokozuna rank unless you start logging in. You, of all people, should be setting a good example.
Photoshop 6 should handle Japanese text fine with the Microsoft Japanese IME 2000. I also have US version Office XP with Japanese text support enabled (I don't know if that makes a difference).

I thought that IME only works with Microsoft software though.
No?
I'll have to try it when I stop being a slacker.

Well, it works just fine for me in Photoshop, without any other Kanji software. I just click the IME box in the system tray and select Japanese input. Then I can type directly into a Photoshop text box, and the Japanese characters have all the normal properties of any other font/text.

If you use Win2K or XP you can do it in the English version because there is such thing as *other versions* of 2K and XP. Just go into the control panel and under Regional Settings add Japanese. Then reboot. Then go back to Regional Settings and add the IME. You should then be able to type Japanese in Photoshop if you know how to use the IME.
If you want to run Japanese software set the default language to Japanese and Japanese software will run too.

awesome! that sounds great greggman! Hrm... havne't I met you somewhere before?
Anyway, I hadn't tried to install photoshop on my 'xp box' quite yet. Now I know that when I get around to doing it, I'll be in Japanese font images of death! Alright. :)

Hi greggman, thanks for stopping by!
I am running Win2k, so I guess that's why it works for me.
BTW, do either of you know if there are any good sites for free Kanji/Kana fonts? The 3 basic Microsoft fonts are pretty dull.

just to add to the discussion, i'm running ps 6.0 on a windows me (us-en o/s) machine and can input kanji into ps's text box using the ms global ime just fine. I just wish Macromedia would get with the program, I'd much rather use Fireworks to create those web items needing text (buttons etc), but am not able to input using the IME (to say nothing of Dreamweaver!) ....
re: fonts, you might want to check out this exhaustive (well, looks so to me) listing here:

much of these links are to non-freeware, fyi....

Welcome to the insanity, sukebe!
Thanks for sharing the link. There's a whole lot to look at there (I'll add it to our web links too).

Well, you know, the first sign of a bad designer is that they use too many fonts!
