Sometimes I think the main reason I am in Nippon is that I watched too much Robotech and Starblazers as a child. It seems like the Macross movies are not the same as the TV show, though somehow they are related. Would I enjoy Macross plus or Do you remember love? Or do I have no idea what I am talking about...

I for one think Macross: Do You Remember love is one of the better movies available... anywhere. I just ordered a Hong Kong DVD from Ebay for 10 bucks, so now I get to watch the uncensored version with good video.. hurray.
Macross Plus is great too. Yoko Kanno is friggin masteful.
Sometimes I think the main reason I am in Nippon is that I watched too much Urotsukidoji and other great pieces of tentacle porn as a child.

That reminds me of one of the replies to the Easy Japanese for nerds (http://www.fuckedgaijin.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6108) story on kuro5hin (http://www.kuro5hin.org/story/2004/2/26/175722/727).
How does one say "OMGOMG I'm being raped by a tentacle. But I can't run because my mammoth breasts and enormous eyes make me too top-heavy for my 12 year old body." Because that might come up too.

Macross Plus doesn't have a lot to do with either Robotech or the Macross saga other than setting. I haven't seen Do You Remember Love. And don't even bother with Macross 7 unless you like bad music and overacting (that's based on 10 minutes of one episode, so give it a chance if you want to). The newest series I have seen though is Macross Zero and it is HOT! Based on Earth, has some familiar characters in new roles and is a different telling of the Robotech Saga (very different). It actually feratures 2 sides in the conflict (unlike Plus) and the battles are excellent CGI. Very fast and very smooth. Getting any episodes may be a problem though. I have only seen the first 3 episodes and that through non-legit channels. But I can't wait for future episodes, if they ever come out (first saw it last spring or summer and have only seen three eps released and translated). If you haven't seen the original Super Dimensional Fortress Macross movie, I recommend it. I don't know about the other movies as I have never had a chance to see them though (and can't remember any titles even though I am certain they exist. Hope this helps...

Well, most people know this, but others surprisingly STILL don't know that
"Robotech" is actually 3 different anime,
Macross
Southern Cross
&
Genesis Climber Mospeida
OF course Macross is the most famous of the three.

This is one of those topics that it's better to feign ignorance. ;)

Man, you're going to make me say it, huh?
"The Virtual Veritech game is probably the coolest thing I ever saw in a cartoon as a kid".

I am well aware of the work of Carl Macek and Harmony gold and the brilliant job they did creating the Robotech saga (though I have no idea what protoculture really is), though I always felt that southern cross and climber were vastly inferior to the space opera of SDF Macross. Now I would really like to see this movie refered to above, however, English subtitle would help me at this point. Hence Ebay HK, but is it in English? And can I get and SDF-1 model. I only see valkiries at the hobby shops...

Seeing as how you're IN Japan, I think buying or renting the R2 DVD is the only legitimate choice.
But if you want subtitles, go ahead and find the...

I don't know how many of the dealers would ship to Japan though, seeing as how Japanese customs would probably bust them.
As for Macross 7... The music gets better since Basara eventually stops singing Planet Dance. As for the acting... Well, I like the show, so that means it's still terrible!
Macross Zero is rocktastic.

Oh I thought that was an intentional manuver. HK certainly is the place for things of dubious origin. I came to Japan because the chinese are good at copying and the Japanese are good at innovating. Original ideas, well...

I never really liked either. Mecha never grabbed me.
Give me some old 80's Fist of the North Star animation, where people touch each other and their bodies explode in bloddy messes. Now that's art!
