FFXI a flop in Japan? (http://www.gamekult.com/finances/article.html?cArticle=a0000017673)

Here 20 best sales of the week in Japan. They are the 20 best sales over the previous week, of Monday May 20 at Sunday 26, provided by the Japanese site Dengeki Online. This week, one attends the rather incredible failure of Final Fantasy XI, which in second week carries out only 7.529 sales, for a total which exceeds hardly 80.000 units sold in two weeks. Squaresoft intended to run out 150.000 to 200.000 specimens twice less time; missed objective. The Japanese players were surely discouraged by the price of the accessories (hard disk, keyboard) and the cost of the subscriptions. The technical problems known by Square with the launching of the play - inopportune disconnections, problems of recording - finished burdening the sales. Nevertheless, Squaresoft always counted on the word of mouth to make take off gently the sales and the subscriptions. Let us guarantee that their analysis was the maid. Though it is, one is very far from the million sales of the preceding shutters of the series, even if if Final Fantasy XI, exclusively online, is it is true a case with share.

I like to think of myself as a huge final fantasy fan, I hope they continue to stay strong!

Well... I never played 8,9, or X yet... so I guess I'm not that huge a fan... I just don't have the time or money yet... but after I get to Japan and get some dough I plan to get back into it! Mwahahha

I can only assume that Square expected sales for XI to be lukewarm, and that they were using the FF name in order to force the creation of a groundwork for future online games. I wish them luck...

Hey I am moving to Tokyo in about 2 months, and I already have a US PS2. Does anyone know if FFXI will work in my PlayStation if I mod it to play import games with the chip? Mainly I am concerned that the broadband/harddrive adapter is not compatible. Does anyone know?

You mean one of the two mod chips that can play original imports that aren't being manufactured yet?

Well, I already have my powerbook hacked to play Region 2 DVDs, and I was really hoping to not buy another PS2. But hell, they aren't really that expensive. Combined with all the FFXI hardware though, that could make a bit of a financial dent.
