You know the old story, come to Japan and become a sexual superstar (http://kansainow.com/cgi-bin/justinsfeatures/guestbook.cgi?type=view).
What's wrong with the women in our own countries, why don't they also sense our God-like MANLINESS (http://www.japan-zine.com/humor.htm)?

Oh christ, don't get me started on this subject. Although I guess I am a beneficiary of the Charisma Man syndrome, I HATE to see gorgeous Japanese women with their geigh gaijin boyfriends. Of course, this is pure, unadulterated jealousy, but I doubt I'm the only one who feels this way.
The worst is seeing Japanese women with the American GIs. Those girls obviously have no clue what kind of guys they're with--until they become a victim of a sex crime, that is.

not all of us are bad though! There are some gaijin in Japan who, through the means of 'gaijin power' can get tons of girls, but, hold off and try to be true to themselves!
some of my best friends in japan were the type who know that you are a gaijin, but don't really care... as long as you fend of the 'gaijin lovers', you can have a remotely normal live in Japan if you try!
Don't fall to temptation!

Yes, there are some very "good gaijins" in Japan, and I try hard to be one of them. The bad ones are those who prey on Japanese girls who may be too naive to know the difference between a good person and a bad person--especially those girls who tend to lump all gaijin together as if we're all cut from the same mould.
I think what you are saying is that the "good gaijin" can benefit from the Charisma Man syndrome but in an ethical way. That means restraining from trying to bang every chick that expresses an interest, then dropping her like a bad habit right afterwards. I've found over the years that Japanese girls tend to be easily led on, and gaijin men use that to their advantage. The women are then left hurt and confused. Let's try to have some integrity, people!

Works two ways man, What about the J chicks who seduce guys while their on vacation in Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii etc and their only intention is to get a visa.
They marry the guy, and when they've stayed long enough, they flick the guy (divorce), and get a free visa and dual nationality (cooler than any Prada bag.)
The thing that's sad, is they pick some poor guy with no job, no clues and no prospects. He meets the J chick, and his life is changed. The guy is devastated when she files for divorce.
It works both ways

The sham marriage/passport issue isn't really relevant to this discussion. Notice that this site is about gaijins living in Japan, and the discussion is about gaijin men in Japan and their treatment of Japanese women.

It is relevant, since this place is for foreigners in Japan AND those less fortunate gaijin who live elsewhere. We can also discuss anything remotely Japan related around the world or the price of tea in China.
I'm not sure if girls who go for GIs are the same ones that go for Charisma Man. I don't think Charisma Man really applies to them. They're just GI Man, they live on a base and go out on the weekends to party. Charisma Man lives 24-7 entirely in Japanese society, and can benefit from the phenomenon in all different areas, not just lovin' (for exapmle, getting paid more than a similiarly or more qualified Japanese employee who is also equally bilingual in English and Japanese). Charisma Man is afforded a certain "Plus Alpha" that he doesn't get in his own country, and that Japanese don't get.
They marry the guy, and when they've stayed long enough, they flick the guy (divorce), and get a free visa and dual nationality (cooler than any Prada bag.)
It's funny, I've used the Prada bag analogy myself to describe the way some (not all) Japanese women carry around their foreign boyfriends.

I think the Charisma Man is any foreign guy in Japan who benefits sexually (not socially) just based on his gaijin status. Under that definition, GIs are also Charisma Men, because they definitely are benefitting from being foreign and living in Japan.
Those gaijins who get expat packages aren't Charisma Men just because they get a higher salary. "Charisma" refers to charm, which infers sexual attraction. Thus, an expat who earns twice as much in Japan as he would in his own country but who can't get a date is definitely NOT a Charisma Man.

Well, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree.
Even in your last case, I think what little play that guy gets in Japan is still more than he would get back home. Someone who gets both unwarranted job benefits and an excessive amount of take-home babes, is definitely benefitting from the Charisma Man phenomenon in more than one area.
The key is in my last post about the "Plus Alpha." (BTW, you know you've been in Japan too long when you use "Plus Alpha" in English...) Charisma isn't exclusively a sexual trait. You obviously haven't played D&D (and missed my reference above). Charisma also works in the workplace, when the charismatic guy gets promoted over the smarter, less charismatic guy (even in the US, or wherever). And by the way, he's most likely promoted my a male boss, so it's (probably) not sexual. The thing is, in Japan, in the grand theory of Charisma Man, your base charisma is improved in every situation.
I was going to point you to the Charisma Man comic above, but it's a new strip this week. Anyway, the previous one had a frame with Charisma Man playing "Arnold" for the kids. This is also probably not a sexual benefit (at least I hope not).
GIs are GIs in other country (even the US), and some chicks just dig the manly image of soldiers (can you say "trailer trash"?). Don't you remember all the WWII soldiers who scored with liberated European girls? There are bases and GI bars in many other countries where the exact same thing happens to GIs, even though there is no Charisma Man effect for civilian foreigners. Most of the GIs in Japan spend most of their time in the "little America" of the base and they DON'T get any benefits from Charisma Man there. Again, I think there's not much crossover between Japanese who are specifically interested in GIs and those who go for Charisma Man (the educated, white collar image). Sure there are some who just go for anything with blond hair, but most women do have discerning tastes.

Here's my champagne glass--*clink*
Although, I'm not sure this has been a squabble. But I do want to launch another volley in the discussion about how to define the Charisma Man:
1) Who says that the comic strip has a monopoly on defining the Charisma Man? It may have coined the term "Charisma Man", but us FG's have seen the phenomenon up close for years before the comic strip came out. And I'd say that the sexual aspect of it is the most prominent part.
2) I object to the connotation that expat benefits are unwarranted or based solely on the fact that one is a gaijin. Expat packages are based on the presumption that the gaijin would not normally give up his comfortable lifestyle abroad to come to Japan and live in a rabbit hutch. The expat package is basically a tool to entice foreigners with expertise in a particular field to bring that expertise into a Japanese firm for the purpose of trying, for example to expand into a new overseas market, or to adopt a different business model. This has absolutely nothing to do with being a Charisma Man.
3) Regardless of the fact that GI's are popular with chicks in other countries, the fact remains that the reason they are popular IN JAPAN is that they are benefiting from the same Charisma Man syndrome that benefits the white collar gaijin--i.e., the same myths that J-chicks have about gaijin apply to either group of FG's.
4) D&D is geigh.
Thank you. :P

Everyone knows that 'Charisma' has nothing to do with why some otherwise feeble guys get chicks in J-land.
It's because there is an immensely huge proportion of native men who are even more pathetic asexual wimps than even the rif-raf that makes it over here. Just look around. Nerd city!

This is a great thread!
Might I suggest a distinction between "Charisma Gaijin" and "Rice King"?
To my way of thinking, Charisma Gaijin refers to those who make special efforts to kick extra mileage out of their Gaijin Status in Japan. Some examples could be currying special privileges at work, accepting free drinks at a local night club (while the Js pay full price), making celebrity appearances as a gaijin "talent", etc. If taken too far, this mindset can lead to the debilitating disease Jesus Christ Superstar Syndrome (JCSS). JCSS typically remains latent while the unsuspecting victim remains in Japan. The disease manifests itself upon return the victim's return to their home country. Symptoms include long stints of unemployment, chronic pain caused by people laughing at the victim's sucky artwork, music and crochet hats. I've even heard about an ex-JET who killed herself because nobody wanted to see her pictures!
Some gaijin arrive in Japan and suddenly find themselves funnier, sexier and more intelligent than they were back home. Capitalizing on this new-found status, they choose to play the role of Charisma Gaijin. When you get down to it, it's a choice that is made by people early on.
As for gaijin dudes who attempt to exploit their Gaijin status specifically to nail Japanese girls, we call them the "Rice Kings."
C'mon, these girls know what's going on!! They need a good shag every now and then, just like the rest of us. And if they think G.I. Joe (with Kung-fu grip, of course) is the man give it to them, hey--who are we to disagree!

5. Arrogant
6. Drinks a lot
7. Does not attempt to fit into Japan
8. Approaches anything in a skirt
9. Treats anything in a skirt purely for sex
That basically sums it up. The thing is, if a gaijin tries to fit in here, the Japanese women won't like him. That's just how it is. Draw your own conclusions.
