Re: Afraid of turning Japanese?

I let my beard grow out and just lift weights and drink and fight... Are you me? That pretty much sums up my current life in Japan. Me too, without the beard or fighting, I do nothing but work and go to the gym. I did go to my local boozer recently and it kind of reminded me of the opening post on ...

Re: Building the Gaijin Ghetto

I'm actually kind of looking forward to when this happens. We could build a"ghetto" with pavements, parks, houses with insulation, empty trains, and where people have manners and didn't shoulder barge you or treat you like you didn't exist, peace and quiet from not being shouted at continu...

Re: "No sex please --- we're Japanese."

It's not my scene so I only know what other people have told me. There's not much to explain. If you know what a swingers club is, you know what a happening bar is. I think a lot of the women who go are with their husbands/boyfriends so I don't think you have to worry too much about stalkers. As I ...

Re: No smoking please, we're Japanese

As in most things, Japan is about a decade, if not more, behind other countries.

This will be a big improvement in QoL.

Re: Sex & the City of Seoul

I've been there. Had a wild time, but it seems like a poor place still, and has the feel of a kind of shanty town behind the gloss. The women were prone to thievery as well which has deterred me from returning. They are very free in their clothing sense, and perhaps rather poorly dressed in comparis...

Re: Life lessons from a grizzled old expat

I would humbly say that it is pretty fluent. No way we can assess that over the internet, so I'll take your word for it. What we can assess from your previous posts here , though, is that you're awfully knowledgeable and familiar with the gaijin/Roppongi/expat bar life. My god, you went and ...

Re: Life lessons from a grizzled old expat

Mid 20s? Sorry, you don't get to write an article like that and be taken seriously until you're at least 40. +1 If you spent that time formally studying you'd be fluent and have a real job and real Japanese friends which you'd meet outside of bars by now -- one's that you could have real intelligen...

Re: What Tokyo really needs, a fuckin' Castle

I couldn't see where they will build it.

Nonetheless, I hope it contains at least a Beams, Afternoon Tea, Doutor, and maybe a small Yodobashi or Bic Camera.

Re: Apartments: Furnished or Non Furnished

I was in a furnished expat place at a similar price point. Actually the furnishings were alright. Bit of a hotel feel, but liveable. The only problem was the pillows, which stunk. I bought some new one's myself. Other than that it was a good deal really. For 3 years, I would probably go furnished. P...

Re: Looking for a nice neighborhood.

Way off topic but there are a couple of traps with renting that place: one is that there is a monthly cleaning fee of 10,000 a month for cleaning the communal toilets and communal kitchen sink (love the retro concrete sink, wish it was tiled though), and the lease is for a fixed term of 18 months, ...

Re: Looking for a nice neighborhood.

My advice: the closer you can get to your office the better. If you are commuting for 2+ hours a day like a normal Japanese you will hate every aspect of your existence.

Re: Pachinko is dying, boo-fucking-hoo

In my view, the sums of money involved also severely erode the work ethic. I have been in work situations where coworkers have driven 20 Km down a mountain road after their paid work to go to their "honshoku" pachinko. On a good day their winnings are 8 to 10 times what they earned that d...

Re: 'Japanese only' -- except for the players and coach

Maybe they were insisting that people who enter that area should only speak Japanese. As in, Japanese [speaking] only.

I saw Man Utd. play at Urawa. I hope they won't repeat it if the stands are full of racist scumbags.

Re: New swarmy fuckwad to be next Tokyo governor

Sadly, The Economist (which chooses to call itself a newspaper, not a magazine thank you very much) lost all credibility on 18 January 2012. For me it was when they supported active intervention in Syria. As if that's what the World economy needs now. I still subscribe, but I'm aware that they are ...

Re: VOTE FOR MISS HOOTER(less) JAPAN 2014!

Given the name of the store, I would have expected some key information for each of these girls.

Had a look through the window a couple of times - but it didn't look like it was a lot of fun. Went to seedier pastures instead.

Re: Japanese Gold Diggers Lose Home: Heartland to Close

This bar was the greatest place ten years ago. Sure, the beer was awful, but me and my mates had so many great times there. We'd be in there at least one or two nights a week, and each night would leave us smiling happily and full of merry tales the next day. I read about the closure on Bloomberg an...

Re: TEFL to nowhere

Oh, one more note....Japanese universities really want the PhD. You can get by with the MA for a bit, but you'll be changing jobs every three years or so. Re: Japan won't give up CD obsession

I have been into downloads a lot over the past few of years, but I keep finding that I lose files between systems/drives sometimes. Quality of sound is also often quite variable.
