Huge underground casino shut down in red-light district
Mainichi
A huge illegal casino in Tokyo's raunchy Kabukicho district has been put out of business after making 3 billion yen in six months, with over 70 arrests made, police said Monday.

A weekend raid on the casino, Juice, netted 32 employees arrested for operation of a place for gambling, while another 40 were arrested for illegal gambling, including 25 foreigners.

Juice had taken about 3 billion yen since opening in November last year, making it one of the capital's largest illegal gambling dens, police said...more...

I saw a rather rotund guy on Dogenzaka last night with one of those billboards. I remember seeing "Casino" on the board, but thought that was just a euphamism for something else. He didn't seem terribly happy about the whole deal. What's your job Aki? I'm a piece of blank space just waiting for your corporate message.

Casino dealer, 3 others arrested over fatal bashing of student
Mainichi
Four men were arrested Tuesday over the fatal bashing of Rikkyo University student Keita Suzuki, who was left for dead in a Tokyo hospital on Sunday morning, police said.

Makoto Yoneda, 33, a dealer at a Kabukicho casino, and three men who accompanied him to the Shinjuku Police Station were arrested for inflicting bodily injury resulting in the death of 21-year-old Suzuki.

Yoneda admits bashing Suzuki, and the three men who also surrendered themselves to the police blame him for the attack, but the suspect denies murderous intent.

"I bashed him because I was furious that he had pulled a scam while gambling. I didn't mean to kill him, though," Yoneda told the police....more...

It might not have been an illegal casino. There is a casino bar not far from where I live. It has the whole works and jerks, roulette, black jack, poker etc, all on proper tables. The only catch is that any money won at the tables can only be spent in the bar. This is how they avoid running afoul of the law, just as the pachinko parlours hand out gifts and not cash.

The gifts can be exchanged for cash in the back alley behind the pachinko parlor.

That's true, but as long as it's not won directly it's ok.

This is one of the many bizarre contradictions I see in Japan...

1. Horse racing + gambling = OK
2. Boat racing + gambling = OK
3. Dog racing + gambling = OK
4. Dog fighting + gambling = OK
5. Lotteries = OK
6. Pachinko = OK

But anything with a table/cards/wheel? EVIL EVIL EVIL!! We can't allow gambling in Japan!!!

Maybe they are trying to protect the pachinko industry??
And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

There are moves afoot to allow 'Real Casinos' but the wheels are turning slowly. My employer is one of the favored aplicants for a permit, but no real approvals have been sighted yet.

I have been to a "casino" in Japan

Postby deltaco » Thu May 26, 2005 2:14 pm

It was a total rip off. I lost a ton of money. They operated "legally" as an amusement place where you didn't win money but if you walked a block away and knocked on a door you could get a payoff. However, the whole place was rigged. If you want to go gambling legally go to Walker Hill Casino in Seoul (Foreigners only) Casino. It sure isn't Vegas but hell of a lot better than loosing your shirt on Japanese "casinos". Oh and the coctail waitresses.........Yummy! http://www.walkerhill.com/english/entertain/casino/

Las Vegas Sun: Japan could be next Asian hotbed for legalized gaming
Where will be the next casino hotspot in Asia after Macau and Singapore? An expert from Osaka University of Commerce says he'd bet on Japan. Ichiro Tanioka, who has conducted a series of studies on behalf of Japan's Liberal Party, said the stage is set for the introduction of legalized gaming in Japan...He said local government leaders within the Japanese Liberal Party would make efforts to try to persuade opposition groups to change their minds, since there isn't enough support nationally to pass a law to allow casinos. He said several questions remain, including who would own, finance and manage casinos, and when and where they would be built...more...
