Sushi Not Healthier Than Pizza

Another option - sushi pizza

Reuters: Think sushi is healthier than pizza? Think again
Think you're taking the healthy option when you choose sushi for your lunch? Think again, according to food writer Trevor Corson. Researching the history of sushi and its rising popularity in the United States, Corson found the popular belief that sushi is better for you than pizza is not always true. In fact a sushi takeout box at an American supermarket could easily contain as many calories as two slices of pizza, and the sushi rolls served in restaurants are often worse. "What we think of as sushi in the United States has become Americanised and that involves more fatty ingredients while the rice tends to be sweet"...Exposing the myth about sushi always being healthy was just one of the surprises that Corson came across as he researched his book The Zen of Fish, which combines the history of sushi with the story of American Kate Murray who trains at the California Sushi Academy in Los Angeles...more...

Corson's book sounds like it covers similar ground to this one.

Japanese food (AKA: sushi) is the fastest growing restaurant segment in Canada.

This article equates calories with health. This is crazy. Sushi has less fat than pizza. less fat means healthier. The calorie count does not determine if a food is healthy or unhealthy.

depends on what's in the sushi. if they're loading it up with mayo, steaming the rice in butter and topping it off with pork rinds and chocolate sprinkles to suit the north american palate it's probably better to go with the pizza..

WBUR: Sushi and The Zen of Fish
America is in the middle of a sushi craze, but it didn't happen overnight. Japan's fabled raw fish on rice first showed up in LA's "Little Tokyo" in the 1960s - so exotic that it made most Americans squirm at the thought. Then Yul Brenner fell for sushi. The hip crowd picked it up. The taste for seaweed and ikura, maguro and toro -- and of course the California roll -- spread. Today, sushi is all over. Millions of Americans gulp it down with relish. But not so many know what they're getting into. This hour On Point: a cultural history of the way of sushi.

The link above will lead you to a 48 minute audio interview featuring Trevor Corson, sushi chef Kate Murray and Jeff Nitta, founder of Zero Sushi.

so are you saying that food that is pure sugar is ok to eat as it contains NO FAT?

less fat does not equate to healthier.

look at the Mediterranean diet - high in olive oil (fats) yet the live to some of the oldest ages in the world.

please go check out your facts carefully before you mention anything. Having worked with health fanatics and gym owners they managed to pass on their knowledge.
will the last one out please turn the light off.....

Not to mention the large amount of fish that a typical Mediterranean diet consists of.

I'm afraid actual knowledge is wasted on Jack.
