MUGGED: an FG's "introduction to Tokyo"

Postby Taro Toporific » Tue Jan 18, 2005 2:12 pm

Neilio, occupation 'Biatch', in his blog wrote:...I arrive at Shinjuku Station (more chaos) and... I figured I would save the cab fare and wait for the courtesy shuttle to the Hilton. I went outside and, eschewing the line of cabs waiting to safely and quickly take me to my hotel, I wandered around looking for the bus stop. Not being the sharpest tool in the shed (but certainly being the biggest tool in the shed), I got off the beaten path while lugging my bags and looking for the bus. I turned to retrace my steps, and two Asian dudes (I say "Asian" because every subsequent Japanese person I spoke to was convinced they couldn't be Japanese) were in my face, saying "Money!" and pinned me against a wall. Not wanting to really find out if they had a weapon, I forked over the US cash I had in my pocket and tried to walk away. When they tried to grab my computer bag, I resisted and swore at them loudly, which drew the attention of passers-by. At this point, the hooligans ran off, but not before shoving me into the wall again, to the chagrin of my head and elbow....more...

His story might be a bit more believable if he threw some C.H.U.Ds ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087015/?fr=c2l0ZT1kZnxteD0yMHxzZz0xfGxtPTIwMHx0dD1vbnxwbj0wfHE9Y2h1ZHxodG1sPTF8bm09b24_;fc=1;ft=21;fm=1 ) into it or fessed up to "I wanted to check out the hookers in Kabuki-cho before I checked into my hotel"....But you have to get pretty far "off the beaten trail" from the west exit of Shinjuku to be in any place where there aren't at least 15 people within 5 meters of you between the hours of 5-8 PM, when most USA east coast travelers would arrive at Shinjuku from Narita.

But he is a self confessed consultant, so reading a map and comprehending things like a "West Exit" sign written in English would be understandably tough for the poor boy to fathom.

You need to use Tinyurl if you don't want to use BBCode to shorten your urls. That massive url gets nicely shortened to this: http://tinyurl.com/53fgz

Considering it was his first time in Japan I doubt he would have known how to find his way into Kabukicho on purpose. Heh, unless someone else had given him directions before he got here. Still, you'd think he'd get rid of his bags first at least.

This is a much more likely scenario! :)

I tried to find that Hilton bus one time. It's not easy from the directions the hotel gives you. I needed help too. Fortunately, the muggers didn't get me...

It's easier to take the LimoBus from Narita, it stops right at the Hilton. I took it once, it's very convenient and cheap. IIRC there are several Limobuses depending on which section of Toyko you're headed to.

I have to say it, this guy is ultimate sucker status.

Not saying you can't get mugged in Japan, but hey, if you are in the middle of Tokyo, and you are a western gaijin, and you still get mugged -- by asian guys (not Iranian/brazilian/etc. thugs) -- then dude, you need to crawl into a hole (in your home country) and call it a life.

where the hell was this guy when I was 19 and completely strapped for cash. I probably could of scared the shit out of him with a harsh glare and gotten paid.

Sounds like a pussy to me. I'm no powerhouse but I don't bend over till I see blue steel in my face. I mean, a certain amount of etiquette is required in these cases.

When I was 13 I got in a fight with a Vietnamese man. He tried some sort of SE Asian martial arts on me because I was bragging about judo. He connected with his kick allright, but it was like a little baby kicked you, I swear to god I actually started laughing. I tore him down proper.

What does it say that the 2 guys picked on a gaijin to rob. With all the Japanese people there to rob (from old to young, male and female), they figured a gaijin as the best odds for a) getting money, b) not getting caught or interfered with by passerby.

Another question is as Neilio mentions "the generous (bordering on unlimited) expense accounts from my client", do you think he charged the client for the money he lost, and the subsequent drinks to get over his experience? 8)
Many great ideas have been lost because the people who had them could not stand being laughed at.

Yea, with a weapon. But, you know don't bring a gun to a fist-fight.

Isn't that supposed to be something like "don't bring a knife to a gunfight"?
