"Rice is Rice."

Postby Taro Toporific » Fri Feb 07, 2003 1:46 pm

Actually there is a way to tell the difference, Japanese rice has fewer broken grains but only sushi-ya or a faux rice-rancher like me can tell.
Japanese consumers know rice. And nearly 80 percent of them "know" that California grown rice is inferior to domestically produced rice, and maintain they can tell the difference.
The perception plays a significant part in justifying Japanese trade restrictions on imported rice. But can they really tell the difference? "The answer is, 'no,'" said Ken Chinen, professor of international business at California State University, Sacramento. "In blind tests they cannot tell the difference even though they say they can."
..."Statistically speaking, there is no significant difference," Chinen said. "It's just an issue of perception. Rice is rice."

I don't know, I don't like American rice and I love Japanese rice - rice is my main food source. There is something to it. American rice isn't sticky enough, but maybe this California rice is the sticky small grain variety. I woudn't think it would matter if the same seeds were used.

There was an american brand that imitated Japanese rice very well. It was sold at Walmart of all places. Same taste. Same stickiness. Same length...
I liked Nisshiki rice. Thai rice is horrible, when cooked in a Japanese style, but it is great when steamed. My best friend is from Laos, and they have some killer sticky rice. It is much more sticky than Japanese rice and you can eat it with your hands.
They mainly eat it with curry style dishes. But American long grain rice sucks.. ewwww

I no longer eat american rice.

My American grandmother likes Japanese rice.

I am staying with her right now and I made some rice in my rice cooker....she loves it
I will not abide ignorant intolerance just for the sake of getting along.
