This town is too cold and far too dirty, but other than that, K.J. Matsui says he likes New York just fine. He was sitting in a Starbucks on Broadway near Columbia University, and it was hard to miss him: He was the only 6-2, 20-year-old Japanese guy dressed in Air Jordan warm-up pants in the immediate vicinity. He tends to stand out like that. He's pretty much gotten used to it by now. In high school, Matsui attended Montrose Christian, a K-12 school in Maryland, which he chose mostly so he could play basketball for well-known coach Stu Vetter. Before Matsui got there, he'd never read the Bible; his family didn't practice any religion at all. "I had no information about Jesus Christ," he said...more...
Japan's Tabuse leaves national team
TOKYO -- Former Phoenix Suns guard Yuta Tabuse is leaving the Japan national men's basketball team for another shot at the NBA.
Tabuse had been training with Japan's national team but decided to leave the squad and head to the United States after receiving an invitation to attend the Dallas Mavericks' summer camp next month.
"I got the news all of a sudden and am happy I was able to get another opportunity," Tabuse said at a press conference Saturday.
Tabuse, 28, played briefly for the Suns in the 2004-05 season and is the only Japanese player to make it to the NBA.
The 5-foot-9 point guard joined the Suns' training camp in 2004 and made the opening-night roster. He scored seven points in his first NBA game against the Atlanta Hawks but was waived by the Suns on Dec. 16, 2004.
