Guard would be first Japanese-born player
Associated Press /Tuesday, September 7, 2004
PHOENIX --
The Phoenix Suns signed Japanese guard Yuta Tabuse on Tuesday. Tabuse, who was waived after spending training camp with the Denver Nuggets last year, hopes to become the first Japanese-born player to make the NBA. He appeared in three games with the Nuggets in the preseason, averaging 3.0 points and 2.7 assists in 7.3 minutes.....
The Yokohama, Japan, native participated in two summer leagues for the Suns.....
The 5-foot-9 Tabuse played two seasons at Brigham Young-Hawaii, and he doesn't consider his height to be a disadvantage.....

The god damn japs are tooooooooooo fucking short to play basketball -- period!!!

One of the reasons of the japs being short has to do with their living style -- the fucking japs never sit properly, they always knee on their fucking floor instead (don't they know there are such things called

Yeap, this little jap boy can 'dunk', I saw that with my own two eyes -- he did it with a 10 foot ladder. ..... And, he was also wearing a parachute -- so that he wouldn't break his legs when he land on the floor after he 'dunk' the basketball.

Typical Japanese TV coverage

Postby GomiGirl » Fri Nov 05, 2004 8:35 pm

I happened to be watching BS1 yesterday and saw some basketball coverage. it was hilarious as in the breaks from the US commentators, the Japanese commentators came on and showed footage of the Japanese dude on the bench, wandering around etc - he wasn't even a starter for this game but the shots and commentary was just about Tabuse. I have no idea what the score of the game was, but I knew the exact number of times Tabuse scratched his balls or picked his nose.

Telegraph: Japan's hero makes it big in basketball

The Japanese have something of a national complex about their stature, so it was a particular source of pride that their newest sporting hero should be a basketball player....Tabuse, 24, played only the last 10 minutes of his debut game for the Phoenix Suns but joyous Japanese media proclaimed it a "historic" and "scarcely believable" moment.
Yesterday, there was tangible pride among Japanese that a man much like any of them could make it to the NBA. Tabuse is just three inches taller than the average Japanese man and close to average for his age group. The newspaper Mainichi led the cheering. "Though Yuta is just 5ft 8ins, his play was big enough for this ultimate stage crowded with stars of 6ft 6ins," it said. The Asahi abandoned its normally dry prose to gush that Tabuse "has made the impossible possible".
...Tabuse has already earned a reputation with sports writers as level-headed and determined. Yesterday, he also showed a typically Japanese self-deprecating humour. Asked about his collision with a colossal opponent within seconds of his debut, he said: "I did that on purpose to give the fans a laugh."

Woa Yao Ming

Postby canman » Sat Nov 06, 2004 12:30 am

Hater in the house. What's up with you. Give the guy credit. He had a dream and stuck to it. But its not so strange for such a short guy to play in the NBA. Does anybody remember Spud Web, or Mugsy Bouges. Here is a link to a cool photo of him.

Yeap! I think so.

You see, when the "most talented" jap b-baller (almost) made the cut in the NBA -- ONLY as a third string (a backup of a backup) point guard of the Pheonix Suns, all the damn japs in japan went crazy.
That's how proud (or how stupid?) of these fucking japs!

I call BULLSHIT!

I talked to three guys from Kobe, Japan in the arcade I work at. Two of them were about 5'10 and I know one of them must have been at least 6'1.
The main reason for the Japanese being of short stature is because they didn't eat a lot of western style foods until after World War 2. They're catching up to us. Give it a couple more decades, and it may be that instead of us towering over them, they'll be towering over us.

Tabuse cut again

Postby canman » Wed Nov 02, 2005 8:40 am

Man I can't understand why one of the poorer teams doesn't sign this guy, keep him on the bench, sell a ton of shirts and other crap, get a tv deal with NHK, since they are dying to show how Japanese athletes can compete with the rest of the world. But I guess common sense rules the day. I thought for sure Toronto was about to sign and keep the guy, much like the English soccer teams have been doing with these great Japanese players, who barely see the pitch even on practice days.

Newsday.com: Rising son from Far East
This town is too cold and far too dirty, but other than that, K.J. Matsui says he likes New York just fine. He was sitting in a Starbucks on Broadway near Columbia University, and it was hard to miss him: He was the only 6-2, 20-year-old Japanese guy dressed in Air Jordan warm-up pants in the immediate vicinity. He tends to stand out like that. He's pretty much gotten used to it by now. In high school, Matsui attended Montrose Christian, a K-12 school in Maryland, which he chose mostly so he could play basketball for well-known coach Stu Vetter. Before Matsui got there, he'd never read the Bible; his family didn't practice any religion at all. "I had no information about Jesus Christ," he said...more...

I assume he is "K.J." because his first name is Keiji or Keiichi.

Japan's Tabuse leaves national team

TOKYO -- Former Phoenix Suns guard Yuta Tabuse is leaving the Japan national men's basketball team for another shot at the NBA.

Tabuse had been training with Japan's national team but decided to leave the squad and head to the United States after receiving an invitation to attend the Dallas Mavericks' summer camp next month.

"I got the news all of a sudden and am happy I was able to get another opportunity," Tabuse said at a press conference Saturday.

Tabuse, 28, played briefly for the Suns in the 2004-05 season and is the only Japanese player to make it to the NBA.

The 5-foot-9 point guard joined the Suns' training camp in 2004 and made the opening-night roster. He scored seven points in his first NBA game against the Atlanta Hawks but was waived by the Suns on Dec. 16, 2004.
