Latest Theme Park ride: The White Elephant

In a busy week for theme parks:

(a) MDN reports that USJ has just been kept afloat temporarily by a loan of 5 billion yen;

(b) Sydney's Wonderland announced it will close, also due to financial woes, in April - the same month a revamped Luna Park is set to re-open;

(c) while, back in Japan again, a theme park based on Kurosawa's Seven Samuraiwas announced on Monday ...

... Officials at Kurosawa Production said Monday that they plan to open both the Kurosawa Village in Akita Prefecture and Akira Kurosawa Cinema City in Tokyo's Adachi-ku in the spring of 2006 ...

Meanwhile, we all await the opening of the Taro-Pongi-run FG Theme Park, where Nihonjin can experience what it's like being a FG for a day (or longer, if they get lost on one of the rides).

I'm hoping to get a job playing The Hammer of Mirth.

One the grrreat "sights" of Japan can be found in the "Edo Mura" fake 16th century Japanese village in Nikko. The village itself is ok, the "ninja" house and SM prison is real fun and far too revealing of current Japanese thinking, hee, hee.

However, the best sight in the theme park is their behind-the-scenes business office especially at shift changes and coffee breaks. They got the Old Edo performers sitting around in costume wearing swords and armor while sending faxes, geisha making copies, and night-soil collectors working on Excel spread sheets. ...all office employees also must do entertainer gigs in the theme park in their office slack time. :rofl:

Sounds great. Especially the Nija house full of trapdoors, etc.

... Reality [of the Edo period] was not quite as pleasant. For the majority of people, life was made up of a regime of relentless toil ... Harvests were heavily taxed by ruling lords that demanded total submission to their authority ...

Sounds too familiar, doesn't it.

If you go during the off-season, it's more fun because as an FG you'll get picked out the audience to take part in the ninja fight or partake of the head oilan's charms during the geisha show. :twisted: Image

And trials have began for "rides" in the FG theme park ...
Image
Above, a group of park staff trainees (consisting mainly of ex-middle management from banks, etc) trial the Nihon Bureaucracy Line "ride" by carry prayers while hopping on one leg over hot burning embers and chanting "Peter Piper picked a pair of peppers ..." at the same time. Anyone falling over, complaining, hopping in a designated no-hopping area, etc. must go to the back of the line and start again.

Management expect that some patrons may have to extend their stay at the park by up to a week just to finish this "ride". :wink:
