Trying to hook up a router with Yahoo BB

Postby Mini_B » Mon Oct 25, 2004 1:47 am

I just got Yahoo BB...I'm trying to hook up a router to use a couple laptops in my apt. Has Yahoo made it impossible to do this? I'm having a real hard time setting it up and I could use a pointer or two. I know this is really basic...but seriously...I'm frustrated.

2 laptops, Windows XP, Router is LINKSYS 4-port switch / VPN model # BEFSX41

Thanks in advance.

try that.

It should be setup modem, plug modem into router. Configure router with Username/password/DNS (domain name server), etc..

Then zoom zoom zoom. I don't have YahooBB but I do have Flets ADSL and Flets Fiber. Both work in that manner.

Router tips from the doctor

Postby DrP » Mon Oct 25, 2004 10:54 am

Well -- there are several ways you can do this:

1) First - what Yahoo bb modem do you have?
2) Do you have to establish your internet connection via software on your computer? Or can you just connect the network cable and go?
3) If you can just connect the cable and go - then your Yahoo bb modem is a router and already managing the authentication, etc.
4) In this case, you can simply setup your Linksys router as a network translation router (NAT) and you 'may' have to enter the DNS given to you by Yahoo bb - but it will usually just be the IP address of your Yahoo bb modem.
5) You need to know the IP address of your Yahoo bb modem - so before you do anything -- connect your computer to it and open a command prompt. If you are using a Windoze variant then you need to gather that information by either 'ipconfig /all' or 'winipcfg'. If you are on a MAC then go to your network control panel and see the info from the network settings.

Now - if your connection requires using software loaded on your computer (pppoe) then you need to configure your Linksys router to establish the connection for you. Essentially it becomes the PC. So there should be a place to configure pppoe - simply put in the user information there. It will do the rest.

Since Yahoo bb uses several types of ADSL service, it's a bit of crap shoot whether you can use the DSL port of the Linksys directly. Usually you have to use the modem supplied by Yahoo bb - which in some cases is even further 'individualized' to your particular switch location.

In ANY case - the easiest is to use the existing Yahoo bb device, then simply configure your router accordingly. Usually people have problems because they don't put the network cable into the correct 'cross over' port (or switch) of the router. Make sure you have a LINK light on your router when you plug in the cable! It also helps to reset your router back to default settings before beginning this entire process.

Also - you can't (shouldn't) be running your router on the same IP space as your Yahoo bb device. For example:

Yahoo bb modem/router IP = 192.168.3.1/24
Linksys router IP = 192.168.1.1/24

This is OK! The networks are different! So mind your network address ip's and netmasks!

Problem solved

Postby Mini_B » Mon Oct 25, 2004 1:50 pm

Guys, thanks for your help. I went to the linksys homepage and configured my router. That was the problem. It was as simple as that.

I appreciate your response and now wish me luck getting some Yahoo cable setup. Any advice on getting 'juiced up' by the cable guy???

Peace

Do you mean BB cable?

actually they provide the router. Your router will be useless.
It will not allow the protocols neccessary for video (most likely)

I reccomend to use theirs and dump the router you have (take it back if you still can - a router that requires you to configure it before you use it is crap anyway).
It will be the same setup as I described above.

If you insist on owning your own router buy the buffalo router. It works too.[/quote]
