Thumbs up Sapporo's SPACE BEER!

The Nikkei is reporting (May 27 14:14 -- subscription link, sorry) that the Japanese brewery Sapporo Holdings is going to brew a “space beer” in November. The above photo shows Okayama University professor, Manabu Sugimoto (R), and his grad student Elena Shagenardanova (L) of Russia with a sheaf of “space barley” from the first generation of barley that was grown on the Russian space lab.

Space Beer Here?

Very interesting, but obtaining space barley in production quantities would be a bit expensive on the overhead from all those shuttle flights and other add-ons.

I suspect they intend to simulate this by growing their ingredients inside of a cyclotron or something to achieve that cosmic radiation flavor and body that you just don't get from Earth-grown grain.

Whether or not this will cause mutations or some kind of zombie outbreak, well, who knows...

100 bottles is just enough for Greji's liquid lunch

Japan plans to brew ’space beer’

May 28 TOKYO (AFP) … apanese brewery Sapporo Holdings said it would make beer using the third generation of barley grains that had spent five months on the International Space Station in 2006.
"We want to finish the beer by November. It will be the first space beer," Sapporo executive Junichi Ichikawa told reporters.
The company will have enough space grain to produce about 100 bottles of beer but has no immediate plan to make it a commercial venture, Sapporo officials said.
