New iPod Nano Leads To Arrest

The new video camera-equipped iPod nano only just gone on sale but a Kobe man has already been arrested for using it to secretly film an 18 year old schoolgirl in a bookshop. He hid the nano in his shoe and, with the lens pointing upwards, shuffled along to get a shot up her skirt. The short news report (Japanese) doesn't say who spotted him but bookshops have become a popular hangout for pervy photographers because their targets are often standing still and otherwise engrossed. Consequently, shop staff are on the look out for suspicious behaviour and girls have also become more alert to the threat. Interestingly, the Life Time Fitness group in the US has already banned the new nano because of fears that it might be used for voyeuristic photography.

They should have seen this coming, giving a country like Japan a small, easily concealable video camera is like giving a 5 year old fireworks. Just irresponsible. It should have become clear by now that unreasonable proportion of Japanese men can't control themselves from doing perverted and voyeristic acts and that putting out such devices in Japan is like add fuel to the fire. There is a reason why cellphones make a noise when used as a camera.

I am not sure, maybe have size restrictions on video cameras, make them come with bright flashing lights. The problem is that if one were determined to film an upskirt video, nothing is probably going to stop him, just don't make it as easy as sticking an ipod nano into your shoe laces. What I would do ensure that things like this don't happen ever again is give them massive fines that would make the risk vs. reward unappealing.

That is going to piss off iraira big time. He's spent a lot of time and money getting all those lenses embedded in his PF Flyers...

I'm still not sure what the 'average persons' needs for having a camera on an Ipod Nano are.. (at least here in Japan, where every citizen already has a camera on their cellphone/and photographers with their cameras) but seriously, did Apple totally overlook the whole perv/peeper factor?

I think there needs to be more of a public/media campaign showing how dudes who do this are such dweebs and losers (not pervs). This type of psychological approach works.

For example, people who used to drink up and then jump behind the wheel to drive were not considered to be the social pariahs that they are now due to the awareness campaigns (eg "if you drink and drive then you are just a bloody idiot") If somebody mentions now how they drove home after getting completely hammered, the negative peer pressure is huge - it is not considered smart or clever.

Sure there are still too many drunk driver accidents but it is far less than it used to be mainly due to this negative peer pressure.

So for pervs who probably wear the perv title as a badge of honour, making it seem like a loser thing to do, would discourage the all but hardcore creeps. Not sure on the most effective way to do it, but it is just a thought.

Think they will put camera sound effects that keitai have here? I bet those were put in to prevent pervs from taking upskirt shots on trains, etc.
