Never criticize anyone until you've walked several kilometres in their shoes.
Because

1. You're now several kilometres away; and

2. You've got their shoes.

It also depends on how the site checks your country. Look into using a public proxy to change "where you are" - and you might be able to watch the CNN telecasts.

The only problem is - it might cause too much lag.
I broke a mirror this morning, which means I should be getting 7 years of bad luck - but my lawyer says he can get me 5.

The Opening Ceremony was damn impressive, IMO. Loved the use of LEDs, projectors, and wires..

Watching women's weightlifting now.. No hotties yet..

This schedule is kind of helpful; you can see what your missing while NHK shows us the Basket Weaving competition, with champion basket weaver Kenzaburo Noguchi. :p

She won a silver medal at the 2006 Commonwealth Games. She quit the sport in 2007 due to a pregnancy but did not carry to term and resumed training in time to qualify for the third weightlifting spot on Canada's Olympic women's team. She was a passenger on the Air France plane that crashed into a Toronto ravine in August 2005..
Hope her luck changes..

Judo

Postby canman » Sat Aug 09, 2008 1:43 pm

I don't care what anybody says, this has to be one of the stupidest sports around. You pull and pull on the other person's clothes, lie on top of each other, hoping to flip or pin the person. How Japanese can get so excited about this is beyond me, other than the fact they are good at the sport. And people complain about soccer being boring. Give me curling any day of the week.

Weightlifting cut short to show Tani (Yawara) twice! Straight after it was finished, replayed. Not a good start to the coverage this year. 'Spose with the sporting guns of Masahiro Nakai leading the team I might be setting the bar a little high.

This sucks on all levels! Yes, I understand in supporting and cheering on your homeland but geez, last time around "The Japanese Judo Olympics" Ueber-played the heck out of the event. 2 weeks of Judo is not really quite my cup of tea.
If the Japanese were to get their butts kicked in the Judo event, would they still continue to watch and support the games or would NHK just go all dark?
I would love to watch this time around some of the other events that the Olympics offer, but I just might be asking a little too much.

Yeah. As luck would have it, at least all the medal places had been decided before they cut away (I think), but the Chinese woman still had some more lifts left.

I agree whole heartedly with the folks complaining about the judo. I understand that people here really want to watch, especially if their athletes are involved, but does that mean that they can't give some highlights of other sports in between matches.

In the end, while it may be somewhat of a generalization, sports coverage in this country just sucks!

I think the last good olympics coverage I saw was CBC's (Canada) coverage of the 2002 Salt Lake City winter games. They were on for about 14 hours a day and showed as much of everything as they could.

Yes, there were excessive amounts of curling, but aside from that, the coverage was wonderful. They were all about showing the gameS, and gave ample screen time to the best in every event, no matter what country the athletes were from.

I hate to think what's going to happen next Saturday for the men's 100M final. If they Japanese guy doesn't make the final, will they still show it?

They're usually pretty good about showing the 'high profile' sports. The 'Titanics' and 'Indiana Jones's' of the Games should be televised. ;)

I loved the opening ceremony. It was very long but generally very entertaining. China did not disappoint.

I am looking forward to the female handball. I did not see too much great looking female talent amongst the Japanese athletes in the opening ceremony. Will there be any J-hotties in any sport? Watching the Olympics in Japan is great for me because I can watch all the Japanese athletes which is what I want.

After I wrote that they were replaying Tani's first fight for a third time. I don't mind the fact they will concentrate on Japanese athletes as every country will have a media bias, but this is a waste. Straight after every one of her fights they replayed the whole thing again. Don't know if she won in the end as I was annoyed and turned it off.
Also exactly the same coverage was on BS1, MX and Asahi. MEH!

If you hadn't provided the title "Judo" I would have assumed you were decribing a hockey fight.

She got the bronze after losing in the semis to the eventual gold medal winner. I can't help but feel sorry for Yamagishi Emi, who beat Tani in the National Championships this year, but had her Olympic spot given to Tani because the Judo Federation (or whatever it's called) felt that Tani had a better chance to win gold.

My GF and I were watching the Opening ceremonies last night and I must say DAAAAAAMN!!!

That printing press piece was damn impressive, but I WISH that NBC would have shut the mouths of the announcers because they would NOT SHUT UP during the whole thing. And then they kept going to commercials.
I am going to have to look and find an uncut recording becuase it was impressive and I think I would have been more impressed without the stupid Olympic themed commercials.
I will not abide ignorant intolerance just for the sake of getting along.

Would someone please explain the concept of highlights to the people responsible for broadcasting the Olympics in Japan. It's really not necessary to replay the event in its entirety, especially when nothing particularly noteworthy occured in most of it.

Because some people didn't bother to watch the Opening Ceremony on Live tv, but there seems to be a lot of commotion about how it was the most spectacular show ever so they want to know what the fuss is all about.

I wasn't actually talking about the opening ceremony, but rather the sporting events. Like showing ALL of Ryoko Tani's matches in toto. I can't tell you how many times I've seen each one. And in the match she lost, NOTHING even happened for most of it--just two women circling each other while occassionally pawing the air.

Highlights people, highlights.

Am I the only one who thinks the events in South-Ossetia of the last few days are far more interesting and relevant than the olympics?

(Aren't you the buzz-kill]Georgia declares state of war with Russia[/B]
http://edition.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/europe/08/09/georgia.ossetia/index.html
.. Separatist-backed South Ossetian sources reported that about 1,600 people have died and 90 have been wounded in provincial capital Tskhinvali since Russian forces entered the territory Thursday.

Russian put the death toll at 1,500 killed, but the Georgians said it would be closer to 100..
And start a thread about it. ;)

But Bush is there to wage peace; we can sleep well tonight.

That's just great! I watched 2 hours of Judo today and little bit of Gymnastics, well, that was all the rage today. I love how Japanese take Judo waaaay to seriously, I hear, "why is it that we Japanese have to change our Dogi to Blue, it's against our Bushido and have to appease Westerners, it's our culture and tradition and the IOC should respect that."
I'm thinking to myself, "self, I cannot believe that I am having this conversation."
Instead of worrying about that, show better coverage of the games, please.
