It could be any season, 5-35 degrees C.
just look around you, if a car is parked, and there is someone in it(japanese) 9/10 the engine will be ON. thats right.

trucks park in the middle on cities and the driver sprawled out asleep on the seat, or droves of taxis. never turn the engines off. or "BUSY" salarymen catching and hour or two of sleep, or monkeys playing with their stereos. or reading manga, or just staring out the window, and of course playing with phones.

so how long?? you ask just waiting?? weeellll NO

From what I have seen 1 hour is a daily occurance, 2-4 very common, and often the overnighter, yes 8 + glorious hours of sleeping in the car with the engine on NON STOP well every week.

ah yes lets waste oil, increase Grobaru temp. and of course make NEEDLESS NOISE. oh what fun it must be to be japanese and not be able to think for yourself and add 2+2.

So why?? why such silly madness so easily controlled by turning a key??

Japanese lack commom sense like it was going out of style. It's really quite unbelievable... At first it drove me completely nuts cus I was trying to fit in. Now that I've said fuck it, and done things like they should be done, I'm a lot happier.

It might not be environmentally friendly but from a purely financial perspective I think leaving the engine running is probably far from stupid. As I understand it after a couple of years it's expensive for the car to pass an inspection so who cares if running the engine idle stuffs the motor, it'll be traded in for a newer model soon anyway.

And from the environmental perspective I'd wager that more people in Tokyo use public transport than in many western cities and are more than compensating for the actions of these "fucking stupid" drivers.

the drivers are standing in front of the buses smoking(helping to destoy), and these are in bus parking zones where they wont be fined.

I actually think the reason people sit with their engines running, on a perfectly beautiful day, is because they think that, with the radio or TV on, it wears down the battery.. They've never heard of an alternator.. Of course, most city people haven't.

Uhh,,,, Guyjean,...for the alternator to generate juice the engine has to be on. Otherwise the thingamajiggeee called the fan belt doesn't turn the little doodad attached to the juice maker watchamakallit.

No, You have to be around 2-3K RPM's in order to charge the battery. at idle its getting nothing.

Yeah, Sydney and London are great. Too bad about the lack of work there. That is why you are in Japan.

Why always pick on Japan and Japanese behaviour? Go in any North American city (except maybe those in California) and you will see the tour buses parked for hours with their engines running. That is not unique to Japan.

Well Ramchop, I think it is pointless, yesterday in the space of 10 mins cycle, I saw three trucks(occupants lazing or sleeping) and two cars, all idyling in the middle of the day,
WAS IT HOT...NO WAS IT COLD...NO but the engines were on as they 99% of the time are.

Why shouldnt they sleep in comfort? they should, so they should go home or to a capsule, or just turn their fucking engine OFF if they had a brain.

Its not usually That hot or that cold you would need your engine on for 3-8 hours. I dont mind someone sometimes leaving the engine on, but the EXTENT that it happens in japan is unbelievable.

The sad thing is the pathetic excuses for it. No ones going to tell me japanese love japan, they treat it like shit and make excuses, Mt fuji is a tip, that should be a world heritage area, and people just shrug. OH WELL.

To be honest I don't know why I've made any excuses for the engine idlers... I probably jumped on this thread as you're using one nonsensical acitivity by a small portion of the population to pass judgement on an entire nation. I find that disturbing.

Many people in Tokyo ride bicycles. Many walk. Many catch the train. Some own cars but only drive them on the weekend. Some sit in the car during their lunch break with the engine idling. The whole population must therefore be fucked.

Even more disturbing is that I find myself agreeing with Gai. If such instances of stupidity throw you into a rage why don't you get out? Especially if this stupidity is endemic to the entire nation.
