Maybe he didnt know what he was getting himself into.

Didnt the Korean war have a draft? Perhaps he was sick of fighting.

The U.S. government wouldnt have a say in his fate unless the Japanese government handed him over.

And knowing Washington, they would make demands and Tokyo would cave in. Is the guy white or black? Cuz, if he was black, they'd hang his ass, but if he's white he might be able to slide.

There is something missing in this story!!

How did a defector meet with an abductee? And then, why were they allowed to marry... wouldn't the NK's want the fact that she was abducted kept a secret and being married to an ex-US soldier just screaming for attention???

Something just doesn't gel.

News of Ex-G.I. in North Korea Only Deepens Mystery
Image
It wasn't during the Korean war... and I get the feeling from reading this article that he was kidnapped too:
He walked ahead, ostensibly to check out something suspicious. Three weeks later, the North Korean state radio announced that this well-regarded Army veteran, a slender small-town man nicknamed Super, had defected to a better life in Communist North Korea

Good luck to him... let's hope we can bring him home. :)

I hope he can achieve the future that HE wants.

It makes me wonder about a lot of the dissappearances that go on here in the U.S.

Maybe agents from other countries nabbed some people from here as well.

Hmmmmm.

Did you know that on a trip to Brazil he said to the leader there, "Oh, you have Black people here to?" Condaleeza Rice had to come to his aid and break it down for him.

I was just in Korea. They have an interesting exhibit on the DMZ at the Korean War Memorial. The story about this guy is he supposedly disappeared while on patrol near the DMZ. I think it`s more likely he got snatched.

This guys is between a rock and a hard place. I mean, if he says he was snatched, his daughters will disappear or will die under mysterious causes. Or if he did defect, the current administration will try to hang him.

He is a f*cked gaijin any way you cut it. He is in a lose-lose situation unless he can get his daughters out of N.Korea, otherwise he is bent over a barrel.

I feel sorry for him.

Jeez, what an ass

Postby cstaylor » Sat Nov 16, 2002 9:46 am

Reflecting the tense situation, Tokyo vented its fury yesterday on the magazine that interviewed Mr Jenkins.

"There shouldn't be the sort of situation where you can just report anything," said the chief cabinet secretary, Yasuo Fukuda.

Japan's prime minister, Junichiro Koizumi, has said that Tokyo will not change its stance on the abductees: "As decided, we won't send them back."

We are back in the matter of Charles Robert Jenkins

Mystery Surrounds Japan Abductee's American Spouse

On a winter night in 1965, Charles Robert Jenkins, a 24-year-old army sergeant, was leading a patrol near the Korean demilitarized zone when he left his men to investigate a noise. What happened next is a mystery.

The U.S. government says that Jenkins slipped into North Korea and defected to the communist North.

His relatives back in North Carolina say he was abducted and brainwashed by North Korean authorities.

What is clear is that Jenkins will be on the agenda when Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi meets North Korean leader Kim Jong-il on Saturday

Hitomi Soga, a Japanese woman who married Jenkins in North Korea after she was kidnapped and taken there by Pyongyang's agents more than a quarter century ago, longs desperately to be together with her husband and their two adult daughters.

A firing squad has "very strong attitude"

Postby Taro Toporific » Tue May 25, 2004 3:26 pm

Dumbo Jenkins may weasel out of this yet....Image

Current laws may compel Japan to hand Jenkins to U.S.: HosodaTOKYO, May 25, Kyodo -Current laws may compel Japan to hand the American husband of a Japanese abducted by North Korea over to the United States if he comes to Japan and Washington wants custody of him on the charge of deserting the U.S. military, Chief Cabinet Secretary Hiroyuki Hosoda said Tuesday....
''If America comes to us and asks with a very strong attitude that this person is being prosecuted thus and therefore they want him to be handed over, it is highly possible at this time that we will come to legal interpretations that would leave us with no choice but to hand him over,'' Hosoda told a press conference....

No change in U.S. policy of handling Jenkins case: Powell
Kyodo
Saturday May 29, 1:21 AM

U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell indicated Friday there is no change in the U.S. policy of prosecuting Charles Jenkins, the American husband of one of five repatriated Japanese abductees, as an Army deserter if he comes to Japan to reunite with his wife.
"With respect to Sergeant Jenkins, he is a deserter from the United States Army and remains so," Powell said at a news conference at the Foreign Press Center.

The statute of limitations is up in 2005...NOT!

Dumbo Jenkins thinks the statute of limitations is up in 2005, hee, hee. .He'is one thick-hick in need of more than a "cuhRAZY Convincer" ---he needs real legal counsel.

President Ford's and Carter's amnesties only pardoned non-violent draft resisters, NOT deserters. Ther's no statute of limitations for desertion. What's more applicable in Jenkin's case is that they throw the book at him: maximum would be dishonorable discharge, forfeiture of all pay-&-allowances and a prison term of up to three years. Although NKorea has claimed that Jenkins "exempt" as he'is a North Korean citizen, but the US military code applies to anyone who has joined the US Armed Forces regardless of citizenship.

-> Japan to pay for Soga reunion
Terrie's Take 280 -- 5/30/2004 9:28 PM
The government has said that it will cover any travel and
additional expenses for N. Korea abductee Hitomi Soga to
meet with her American husband, Charles Jenkins, and their
two daughters, who are still trapped in North Korea. In a
show of generosity the government will probably arrange for
the Sogas to reunite somewhere in China. ***Ed: One wonders
why the US government is playing hardball with the Sogas,
in threatening to extradite Jenkins to the US on army
desertion charges should he travel to Japan? Afterall, the
event happened more than 40 years ago, it's not even clear
why he walked across the border, and the guy is sick... In
any case, according to Jenkins, the statute of limitations
in the US means that in 2005 his desertion will become a
non-issue and at that point he may be allowed into Japan....**
