The Aokigahara Jukai, a 2500-hectare forest at the foot of the mountain, is a suicide destination. Poisoning and hanging are causes of death there but many people simply die of exposure after deliberately getting lost. Dr Yoshimoto Takahashi, a psychiatrist, examined the cases of 116 people who had attempted suicide in the forest but survived. At the time of his 1986 study the number of deaths was 30 a year. By 2003 there were 78.

All you need is a map, some binoculars and sensible clothing. Camping gear is optional, for the serious hobbyist, while day-trippers may want to take out the guess work by using a hand-held GPS marker.
Whether you're an otaku flying solo, a family group on an outing or corporate picnic-goers, Body Spotting can be fun
"We found 3 before lunch," said an excited Keiko Nouganai, body spotting with colleagues on a team-building excursion.
"We also have to guess how they died", added Hiroshi Takeuma, who finished the day with the group record of 7 bodies, although one was later deducted as it turned out to be animal remains.
Body Spotting is not recommended for children under 8.
