Japan gives in over nuclear fusion bid

France to host world's 1st nuclear fusion reactor as Japan gives up bid

Quote:
MOSCOW — France on Tuesday won the bid to build the world's first nuclear fusion reactor backed by a six-party international consortium, after Japan gave up its bid in exchange for preferential arrangements to build a related materials research facility.

The decision to build the reactor in Cadarache in southern France was made at a ministerial meeting in Moscow attended by representatives f r o m China, the European Union, Japan, Russia, South Korea and the United States. Japan had been negotiating for more than three years in a bid to host the $13 billion project in Rokkasho, Aomori Prefecture, but decided to compromise by forgoing the proposal due to the huge financial burden of building the reactor. (Kyodo News)
I don't think I need to remind you that France rules

Japan didn't do too badly. They realized they had lost a while ago and spent the final weeks wringing concessions out of the EU.

EUObserver: France scoops ITER while Japan saves face
Quote:
...Japan will maintain a privileged position in the scheme however. Under the terms of the agreement, the EU will support a Japanese scientist to lead the project as well as securing a quota of 20 percent of the jobs at the head office to be reserved for Japanese nationals. A second, smaller research facility may also be built in Japan.
Nuclear Enginering: France wins Iter site, Japan wins anyway
Quote:
...The rejected site, Rokkasho in Japan, wins the consolation prize of a materials testing facility and a large share of the research work...Favourable terms for Japan include that the EU will pay half the construction cost of the materials facility, to be built at Rokkasho. Japan will also get about 20% of the project’s 200 research posts although it will pay only 10% of the overall project cost. The EU will pay 50% of the construction costs of Iter itself and 10% of that budget will be spent with Japanese firms. Other member countries will pay 10%

What are you talking about, the terrorists come from France! If Dick Cheney says so it's true.

Swearing makes baby Jesus cry.

I pay tribute every year to the great people who risked and sometimes sacrificed their lives for my country (Holland), and that includes a lot of Americans as well. But present-day assholes like you who base their foreign policy and their outlook on the world on something their grandfather did need to pull their heads out their collective asses as far as I'm concerned.

You're probably part of the same group of people who sincerely believe the primary incentive for the US to go to war with anyone since the Korean war is because the people needed to be liberated and democracy bestowed upon them.

You are not even a shadow of your ancestors for saying these things. I think you should be ashamed of yourself for whoring out their sacrifice to bask your own pride.

So you're like the wanker from a heroic lineage.
What's your point anyway? Americans have died liberating France so the French should agree with G.W. Bush's bullshit?
You can say "fuck you" to whomever and as much as you want Maths but face it, you're the only one who's fucked. And thanks to you your Grand -who may have been a man of great honor and courage- is fucked too, looking down in shame onto the moron he fathered.

Back to the topic at hand...
I feel a bit sorry for Rokkasho in Aomori Prefecture. The translation company I worked for in Tokyo had originally started in Aomori and still had a branch office there. Thus, we did a lot of the promotional literature for the Rokkasho facility.

A site in Rokkasho would have been a major plus for Tohoku, which sorely needs an economic/cultural/scientific shot in the arm. Look at the success of Tsukuba - this, despite its distance from Tokyo. Tohoku's main uni of note, Tohoku U, would have benefited as would Tohoku from 1) the media attention and 2) the influx of foreign tech and investment.

Sendai's bid for a major league team seems to have foundered, so here's hoping some other stimulus for the region surfaces.
