ELITE GEEKS ONLY
Interest now obsessive for first 'otaku' test

Japan Times July 15, 2005
Thousands of young Japanese men are expected to take a nationwide exam next month that would, if they pass, grant them recognition as experts in the field of "otaku," or geeks.
Since word of the first-ever Otaku Certificate exam broke in late June, publisher Biblos has been flooded with inquiries...the website www.otaken.jp, set up by the company on June 27 to publicize the event has received an estimated 400,000 to 500,000 hits in just two weeks, briefly causing its counter to malfunction.
The computer-scored test, which will be in a multiple-choice format, will be conducted by mail so anyone can apply, even from overseas....more...

This article claims that the "OTAK" test is to find the "top 100"
Otaku.

Japan hails the return of the nerds
....Such is the otakus' newfound cachet that the search is on for Japan's top 100 geeks. Thousands of men are expected to sit the exam, organised by the Tokyo-based publisher Biblos, in which they will be tested on their knowledge of the fundamentals of the nerd lifestyle - comic books, video games, cartoons, female pop idols and computers.
..Most {otaku], though, prefer to confine their contact with the opposite sex to a genre of manga in which female characters are invariably dewy-eyed schoolgirls who, despite their outward naivety, are unfailingly accommodating in bed.
This skewed portrayal of women in manga and interactive computer games has led to charges that the otaku are at the root of unhealthy attitudes towards sex among young Japanese men.
But Momo, a French-maid waitress, says she is happy in the company of men who otherwise have trouble interacting with women. "I like talking to the customers here, even those who seem shy or might be here because they have some sort of Lolita complex."

MDN: Kyoto Seika University to create first manga faculty
KYOTO -- Kyoto Seika University has announced it will establish a manga faculty to train comic and animation writers. The faculty of cartoon art, which will begin from next spring, will be the first such faculty at a Japanese university, officials said. In 2000, Kyoto Seika University established a Cartoon Art Department in its Faculty of Art but has now decided to create a faculty devoted to comics and cartoon art. Planned departments within the new faculty include a manga department to train comic-book artists, a manga production department to provide the skills necessary to become editors and critics, and an animation department to train anime artists. The university reportedly plans to accept 200 students into the faculty.

KIPPO: Japan's first Ph.D. in cartoon art
A South Korean woman has received a doctorate degree in the "manga" cartoon art from Kyoto Seika University, becoming the first person to win the honor in manga in Japan. Chung In Kyung, who has studied at the university's Graduate School of Art, was accorded the honor at a degree-awarding ceremony for the 2005 academic year. After studying at the university's Department of Cartoon Art, the Faculty of Art, Chung went on to its graduate school. She continued to draw cartoons and study manga. The theme of her dissertation was "Kim Sung Hwan in the history of newspaper cartoons." Kim is said to be the greatest cartoonist in Korean newspaper cartoons since the end of World War II. Her thesis was presented along with her cartoons drawn as graduating work. Kyoto Seika University created a class on manga in 1973, becoming the first university in the world to introduce manga in an educational curriculum. In the new academic year (April 2006-March 2007), the university has opened Japan's first Faculty of Manga.

The Enrichment Center reminds you that the weighted companion cube will never threaten to stab you and, in fact, cannot speak.

Either way, the more dramatic your tale of otakudom is, the better!
Statements like that remind me of Madtv's schizophrenic jeopardy.
