Bank to introduce slot games in ATM machines

OGAKI, Gifu -- A bank based here has come up with an unusual way to attract customers to its automatic teller machines -- by installing slot games in them.
From Aug. 8, Ogaki Kyoritsu Bank will introduce slot games in ATMs that give customers the chance to win back bank fees or cash.
Bank officials say they hope the new ATMs, reportedly the first of their kind in Japan, will give customers a sense of "excitement."
"When it comes to ATMs, financial institutions eagerly compete to make them convenient," a bank representative said. "Banks are part of the service industry. We want people to enjoy a 'feeling of excitement' with a sense of fun."
After customers withdraw money, the numbers on the slot game automatically begin spinning. When a triple seven or the "gold" or "super gold" pictures appear together, the 105-yen after-hours bank fee becomes free.
When pictures line up on the slot game, the customer also wins 1,000 yen cash, which can be received from the bank counter at a later date. The chance of getting three sevens is about one in 10, while customers have about a one-in-500 chance of the pictures lining up.
The service will begin at 10 branches in Gifu and Aichi prefectures, but it will spread to 135 branches across Gifu, Aichi, Mie and Shiga prefectures by Aug. 12. As a rule, one slot ATM will be installed at each participating branch. (Mainichi)

Now why the fuck would I want to wait in line to get money while some asshole is playing the slots? That one dumb fucking idea.

This would only be on each bank transaction, but what immediately comes to mind is the legality. Waiving bank fees for a "win" would seem to be without a problem. However, if they actually pay money 1,000 yen, or one yen, it becomes gaming and gambling is against the law in any form (accept government gambling) in Japan. Pachinko gets away by giving "prizes", which are redeemable for your dust at an exterior location.

This law is what backdoored Blinky's big plans for Vegas styled off-shore casino's for Tokyo. They are very serious about enforcing gambling when it is advertised (so everything has to be kept in the backroom)!

Postby Mini_B » Wed Jul 20, 2005 4:20 pm

That's the gayest thing I've ever heard. Are the banks that desparate for their customers to send furikomis? Nowonder the YEN is dropping like a ton of bricks. I love it. Go dollar, GO!!

Pretty much. Private banking institutions in Japan are often cited as the primary reason that the Japanese economy is in the gutter. Everyone uses the Japan Post Office because they are assured that it is safe.

Kyodo via Crisscross: Bank plans ATM roulette with prizes
Ogaki Kyoritsu Bank said Monday it plans to introduce a computer roulette game Sept 13 to be played on its automated teller machines that will give winners 1,000 yen in cash. The ATM screen will show a roulette wheel when a customer uses his or her card in the machine to transfer money, the Gifu Prefecture-based bank said. The wheel will begin moving automatically during the transaction and the customer will have a one-in-several-hundred chance of winning a cash prize. In August last year, Ogaki Kyoritsu ATMs began offering an on-screen slot machine game that gives prizes to customers who hit the jackpot while withdrawing money. The prizes include fee waivers for ATM use and payments of 1,000 yen.

It's not just ATMs:

screw that

Postby james » Tue Aug 29, 2006 10:09 pm

i have a long enough wait, what with all of two bank machines we have here and the third spot occupied by a potted plant and the line outside the door at lunch. the banks keep such convenient hours too.. 9-3.. i guess no one works during those hours. i sure as hell don't need to be stuck behind some gambling addict.
