Aussie Swearing Bemuses Japanese

Postby Mulboyne » Tue Mar 28, 2006 1:00 am

[floatr]Image[/floatr]The Age: What the bloody hell does it mean? Slogan baffles Japan
TEACHING Japan to swear is too bloody hard. The catchiest punchline in years has proved impossible to translate into Japanese, leaving Tourism Australia to ask: "So, why don't you come?" Print advertisements with the English-language scrawl "So, where the bloody hell are you?" have had the new line added for Japan. It will also be used in TV and radio broadcasts...Tourism Australia's general manager in Japan, Kazunori Hori, yesterday spent several minutes during the launch of the $21 million campaign in Tokyo carefully explaining in Japanese the idea of mateship to an audience of travel industry representatives...the vexed problem of how to translate "Where the bloody hell are you?" had been thrashed out in focus group meetings between November and January. Tourism Australia's managing director, Scott Morrison, said his favourite line from those groups was from a Japanese man who said: "Bloody hell, the more I hear it the more I like it"...more...

Sunday Mail: Japanese fall out of love with Australia
THE number of Japanese tourists heading to Australia has hit an all-time low, placing the lucrative $2.2 billion market in jeopardy. NSW has been badly hit, with a 30 per cent fall over the past five years. Tourism NSW said the Japanese market was bored with koalas and Sydney Harbour, so was turning to Europe, the US, and destinations closer to home such as China. "They don't find Australia attractive any more," Japan's largest tour company JALPA said. The accelerating decline is set to worsen with JAL rumoured to be considering stopping flights to Australia.

In another blow, Tourism Australia's $21 million advertising campaign "Where the bloody hell are you?" has failed in Asia because they don't understand it. It was modified for the polite Asian market to: "So, why don't you come?" but industry leaders say the Japanese do not get the humour in the translation...Tourism and Transport Forum chief executive Christopher Brown said more was needed. He called on the NSW government for urgent funding and accused the tourism industry of being "fat, lazy and complacent". "NSW's position is becoming more and more dire. We have allowed Australia's position to slip in the most lucrative market on earth -- Japan." He added that NSW is the least-funded state in Australia for tourism.

Yep, the Japanese "So, why don't you come?" CM has been playing twice an hour for the past month on many of the SkyPerfecTV channels. It's so bloody mild sounding in Japanese I didn't even notice it for the first week it ran even though I had read all about it before it started being aired here in Japan. :-|

I wonder why they ever thought it was attractive in the first place. There are plenty of uncivilized desert islands that are closer and more attractive.

Hey Guys!
I want to join the Chuckles-bashing!

But wait...
It'd just be a waste of your time and my time. So why do ya'll do it?

Charles has posted some messages that I've found pretty damn helpful. And if he dislikes Aussies, SFW? Any number of Kiwis have told me the same sorts of things: "Yer Aussie's a f*ckin enimal."

So -- Where the Bloody Hell are you?

Postby DrP » Mon Jun 05, 2006 7:04 pm

I put one of the signs up on my blog --- it kind of freaked me out seeing it plastered everywhere. http://www.tokyotonite.com/index.php?op=ViewArticle&articleId=49&blogId=1

Soon as I get some free moments, I'm thinking about some alter-campaigns...

New York - "Who da FUCK are you?"
Detroit - "What up, Ni**a?"
Thailand - "Me no see you long time!"
Iraq - "Come on over! It's a BOMB!"

Any others?
See you in PyonPyang!

apparently the tourism minister was baffled as to why it had to be modified to:
WHY DON'T YOU COME?

claiming the obvious innuendo was even worse than the original.

other options passed over were:
YOKOSO OSUTORARIA!

LET'S TO AUSTRALIA!

GET YER ARSE DOWN HERE NOW MATE!

and the minister's personal contribution:
WHERE THE FUCK ARE YA YA FUCKEN NIP!?!

Australia Asks Japanese: `Where the Hell Are You?'
Dec. 20 (Bloomberg) --
.... An A$11 million Australian government campaign to lure more Japanese this year hasn't reversed the trend. Advertisements featuring a blonde, bikini clad-model extolling the attractions of Australia's uncrowded beaches flopped when the colloquial "Where the Bloody Hell Are You?'' slogan got lost in translation.
'Bloody Hell' Flop --- The oath doesn't exist in Japanese, so Tourism Australia changed the slogan to: "Why Aren't You Coming to Australia?''
"The tagline doesn't really click with the Japanese market,'' said Kurosu at the Japan Travel Bureau Foundation....more...

Answer: someplace safe.

Deadly Oz kills 2,433 tourists

Australia was a deadly destination for 2433 overseas visitors in the past seven years - including at least 25 children.
Statistics have revealed the hidden toll Australia's harsh environment takes on tourists with drowning the third most common cause of death.
Lifesavers said many tourists failed to see rips and wildlife experts said even a koala could "carve up" an inquisitive foreigner who invaded its space.
Between 2003 and 2005, 28 tourists drowned while 65 were killed in car crashes and another 276 died of natural causes.
Heat stroke claimed the lives of three tourists, seven died scuba diving or snorkelling, two died hiking, one died parachuting and another died after being bitten by an animal.
The statistics from the National Coroners Information System, which recorded 474 deaths in three years, also revealed that men are almost three times more likely to die while visiting Australia than women.
Eight children aged under 10 on holidays with their families were among the dead with another 17 children aged 10 to 19 also dying...more..

Herald.com: Ads aim to arrest Japanese tourism decline
A NEW tourism campaign spruiking Australia's world heritage areas will be launched next month in a bid to reverse a decline in Japanese visitors...The new campaign comes following research – for an action plan probing the negative trend – indicating Japanese tourists were keenly interested in world heritage areas...Titled Immerse Yourself in Australia's World Heritage, the campaign will feature print, cinema and internet advertising and will complement the controversial "So Where the Bloody Hell Are You?" drive. "In the 1980s, Japanese tourists fell in love with Australia," Ms Bailey said. "We were the 'hot destination' and we thought the Japanese love affair with Australia would never end. "We were wrong"...more...

There are loads of great places on the ozzie heritage site list, like Freemantle Prison.

Hawaii had a similar problem several years back. Seems that over the years they had tweaked everything to cater almost exclusively to the Japanese tourist, to the exclusion of all else. When the Japanese tourist influx started drying up, they were caught unprepared to deal with American mainlanders and Europeans who were filling the void. Actually went so far as to complain that the non-Nipponese tourists weren't spending enough daily on average to compensate for the high-rolling Japanese. The Hawaiians finally figured out that although other tourists had a lower daily average spending limit, they usually stayed longer and even got out of Waikiki once in a while to spread the wealth.

This is probably the only good thread for my typical ozzie comments. And besides, that was one of my most complimentary, positive ozzie messages. I thought it was rather clever, especially considering the timestamp, I see that I posted that about 6 hours after I got out of the hospital and was heavily sedated.

You and I have gone through this before, I am only treating ozzies with the same bigoted attitudes they have for everyone else. I couldn't possibly hold such attitudes in real life, it would wear me down to nothingness. So if my comments annoy you, ignore them, they are not aimed at non-ozzies. But maybe someday, some poor besotted ozzie will read my over-the-top comments and swear to mend his own ways and not be such a bigot himself. Unlikely, but it is always a possibility. Perhaps you and I agree on eliminating bigotry, we only disagree on tactics.

Chuckles, if you believe ANY ONE of the following:

(a) that all 20,000,000 Australians are the same]7 year old girl that terrified you in a hotel one time; OR
(c) that bad behaviour is exclusive to one nation,

then you need some serious time on a shrink's couch to have any hope of losing your bigotry.

Otherwise, that kotowaza rings all too true.

BTW based solely on your allegations, that little girl was picked up in an unmarked van and transported to an offshore facility for 're-education'. 8)

I'm sure it doesn't help that the A$ is as strong as it's been since.....forever?
Plus the fuel surcharge for a Sydney-London return is hitting A$1000.....I'd be thinking somehwere nearer/cheaper too.

Old post I know and I realise you're unlikely to ever take this advice but Fremantle Prison is a really interesting place to visit if you're ever there. Death row/the gallows is an especially haunting place to stand. Recommended.
