[floatr][/floatr]A new restaurant called Mayomayo has just opened in Nagoya, They specialize in, not surprisingly, mayonnaise. They've copied the gimmick introduced by Mayo Kitchen in Tachikawa: they offer a "bottle keep" service. Buy a bottle of mayonnaise from them for 500 yen, write your name on it and they'll keep it for you for up to a month. I was going to add this to an FG mayonnaise thread only to realize that we don't really have one. That's a bit surprising given that Japanese eat around 200,000 tonnes of the stuff a year according to the Mayonnaise Association (Japanese).

I think out of all the posts I've read on FG, this is easily the most disgusting and physically disturbing one so far.

Just about threw my breakfest when I saw this. The purpose of mayo is hide the taste of something bad, like the way mother let small children put mayo on their vegetables. How can you eat the stuff solo?

Since the world opinion now says that Japanese food is healthy food, I think mayo ice cream should be a requirement on the menu of all overseas Japanese restaurants.

I was really surprised how much Mayo Japanese people use on food. Straight I mean. A few days ago I was invited to a students house for dinner, and he was asking me what kind of foods I liked etc. When it came to salad he said what kind of dressing do you like, do you like mayonaise? I quickly said no thanks I prefer Italian. Why do people think that putting globs of mayo on salad equals dressing?

[floatl][/floatl]....Japanese people as a whole love mayonnaise and eat it on everything; they dip all sorts of vegetables into it (the examples given were radishes and celery) or they smear it onto cooked vegetables (such as broccoli), or heap it all over a bowl of cabbage. Or a pizza. Or anything really. They like to slather a thick layer of mayo on slices of bread and toast it....

Geeez, and I thought it was only me that thought the stuff is retched! My wife would keel over if she didn`t have the ol' mayo. We have 5 bottles of it in our fridge. How do you think I feel when we`re eating Ebi and she has to drown the poor suckers in an ocean of glob.
Takoyaki, Okonomiyaki, Broccoli....need I say more, but I`m strange, because
I put ketchup on my fries, but her family is trying to push me to mix the ketchup and the mayo....can someone give me some good advice? Is this normal behavior or am I the lame one???:confused:

The only things I have mayonnaise with in Nippon except from potatoes are takoyaki and tempura. Everything else is just nasty.

I've seen worse than that. I remember once I was at the food court of Mitsuwa in Chicago, some Korean guy ahead of me in line bought a sushi bento, then he popped it in the microwave to cook it. Then he slathered it all with mayo. It looked disgusting. It smelled disgusting.

The kewpie-brand mayo tastes a lot different from the Hellman's brand mayo we eat in the West. I think the Kewpie mayo is pretty well-suited for the things that Japanese put it on. I agree that it's unhealthy, though. Shouldn't eat too much of it.

...and even then there's mayo and mayo. The stuff you eat as mayo in the US is actually called "fries sauce" in Holland, and the actual mayo over here has far more egg in it. I agree that Japanese mayo is more "compatible", but to put it on sushi is just wrong.

This is all so wrong! Mayo...no matter how you stir it. Whether it`s US, Japanese, Korean or Dutch...is just gross...pure and simple.

Some of the taste difference can be attributed to rice vinegar, which also accounts for the yellowish colour. I wonder how mayonnaise made using black rice vinegar would turn out.

The data on that Mayonnaise Association link indicates that female single households consume almost twice as much mayonnaise as male single households.

There's no mention of the spit to swallow ratio there though.

I was just thinking about how natto is still less appealing than these mayonnaise dishes when it suddenly occurred to me that someone just might...and indeed they do...





and natto with mayonnaise seems to be popular on toast...

I probably love mayo more than the average person. I don't care what Vincent and Jules think, I'm an American who loves it on fries. However, the shit they do with mayo here is absolutely astounding. I remember my Japanese teacher telling the class that bowl of plain rice smothered in mayo was "chooooo oishii!"

Heresy. Only vinegar goes well with fries.

I quite like a small dollop of mayo on some things - but when I've seen people just eating it out of the tube I feel revolted.

Also conbini sandwiches have so much of it on them they're revolting!

I prefer tartare sauce on potato wedges - I never dip fried potatoes in ketchup - yuckies.

What is good though if you get the frozen ebi from the supermarket, heat them up and douse them in a sauce of mixed mayo and tomato sauce and serve em up on a bed of lettuce - yum!

Mayo + ketchup on fries is pretty damn good! Mix in a little tabasco with it, and the fried goodness really sings.
