Aichi Residents On Foreigners: Not Good For Us But Good For Our Kids

The Chunichi Shimbun a few days ago published the results of a survey conducted in Aichi prefecture. To the question "What do you think about the growing number of foreigners?", 31.1% replied that they didn't think it was a good thing because there would be an increase in crime while a further 13.3% said that cultural differences were likely to be a source of trouble. Altogether, 47.3% of respondents thought that an increase in foreigners was undesirable. Of the 29.4% who did want to see more foreigners, 16.4% thought it would be a good chance to meet and learn more about different people. Interestingly, to a question about foreign children in schools, negative views were in a distinct minority. 45% of respondents thought diversity in schools could be a good thing while others thought it would be a good experience for their children to be in a cosmopolitan environment.

'tis a shame the fuckers that responded to that survery didn't have a little more "diversity in their schools" while they were growing up. I'd love to see another survery of this kind in 20 years just to check if such a "cosmopolitan environment" had any impact on their inward thinking.

It is a real shame that so many people still feel this way in modern times. It kind of hurts me to think so many people believe we are all criminals. Do nearly half the people that see me on the train, or walking down the street think that of me too? Well maybe that is a good thing sometimes haha.
I feel lucky to have been raised in a metropolitan area of the US where I could see, and interact with people from all walk's of life. I could never imagine how it would feel to be so close minded.

The question is does crime increase in areas where foreigners increase in numbers? If so, why?

I don't know if anyone has done any studies based on this but it would surely be interesting to know if foreigners moving into J-neighborhoods make them more dangerous or less... and then get that study out in the public to either prove or disprove this stereotype and be done with it all without introducing bias and fallacy if possible.

I can certainly understand the cultural issues involved with Japanese having to deal with a horde of foreigners coming into their neighborhoods. If you are used to your neighborhood being a certain way and then all of a sudden or even gradually you are confronted with an influx of foreign people with foreign ways it can really make you xenophobic and harbor ill will toward them.

Someone who answered that the growing number of foreigners was a concern could nevertheless still offer you a warm welcome as a neighbour. I'd settle for being left alone.

True, but does that mean, we have to put a cap on immigration and just let things be the way they are without trying to make more of an effort, just because of xenophobia??
To me, that is just nothing more than a mindless excuse. Japan is not in the position to keep the old mentality, we are an Island nation therefore, we have no experience...yada, yada, bla, bla...
I believe that FG should try to fit in and try to understand what the culture and rules are in their host country, but at the same time, the Japanese have to come out and also see that there is another whole world out there, other cultures, religions, races, Japan is not unique in this area. I just hate to always hear, "We are the one's that are criminals," whatever we do, we get suspicious looks and often false accusations. We all have to learn from each other, Japan should not get a pass. Ignorance is a bliss.:(

Aichi residents

Postby ColinizeR » Tue Feb 19, 2008 11:25 am

My wife is from Tsushima, near Nagoya and I have been there on several occasions (only a few weeks at a time mind you)...

Everyone I encountered in Aichi was nice to me...unless they were very good at pretending

But I guess I didn't associate much outside friends and family...

Has anybody experienced any extreme negative reactions towards themselves or other gaijins?

Just curious....:smoking:

I've lived in Japan for around 40 years, how much time you got to talk about this?

just the most extreme examples would be ok :-p

I have yet to feel the wrath of the natives...in fact it has been pretty much the opposite for me....but maybe I have been sheltered by my in-laws, wife etc.

One day I would like to live there for a year or two....

In the future

It's always that way when you are visiting. When you move to Japan, it's "Oh no, it looks like he's here to stay." Then, things really start to change....

I had a guy on the subway who was a bit of a crazy (rambling to himself and yelling and grunting at other Japanese passengers when they sat near him) say he was going to stab me, right there in the middle of the crowded train car in front of everybody. He eventually shut up when some yakuza looking oyaji with a punch perm sat down next to him and shoved him everytime he grunted or said anything.

I've been stopped by the police, and had them visit my house on several occasions just to "check up on things".

Online I get outright racist comments and death threats from Japanese everyday :p

I don't think Take has threatened my life yet, unless you count the all-inclusive "death to the american pig dog dudes" type of prattle.

I have a Japanese website, nothing particularly special, just posting stupid videos and pictures, where I always get the occasional twat who thinks he's a detective and has "discovered" that I'm not Japanese through some error in my grammar or some such (despite the fact that it says all over the website that I'm American) which is generally followed by stuff like "if you don't like it, get out", "if I meet you in real life I will kill you (almost always something to do with knives, not sure what the Japanese obsession with knives is)" and the like.

Also, online games! I play/have played several online games, generally on Japanese servers because they are close and offer a better ping, and there's always one or two twats, especially fun in games with voice chat!

Here's one of my favorites from the game Gunbound where some guy was threatening to kill me with with a knife and turn me into sashimi (note the highlighted text), for someone making threats through a video game on the internet his nickname was ironically "最]http://www.fuckedgaijin.com/forums/images/vbimghost/185747ba8ca109a1a.jpg[/IMG]

next time a Japanese person tells you that they will make sashimi of you, just tell them that you have a lower mercury level than they are accustomed to.

That's a fact: Foreigners = greater crime. It's the same in every country. The reason is that those who immigrate to another country are usually poor people. Very few rich (well-off) people will leave their country and comfort to settle in a foreign land. those who immigrate do so for financial reason. Immigrants come from third world countries where stealing and dodging the law are life's necessities. So when they come to a docile country like Japan they figure that they can steal and get away with it. I think in Japan when they talk of foreigners they are mostly thinking of those from other Asian countries like China, Philippines, Indonesia and so on. Not Americans. But everyone gets lumped in as "foreigner"'.

The best thing to do is to have an appropriate immigration policy and better choose where immigrants come from (i.e. less from Jamaica but more from Senegal).

Look at country like France and what it has become with the millions of immigrants, or Germany or Denmark. My wretched country was a much better place before the immigrants came from all the third-world countries in the world.

I do, but it doesn't change the fact about the source of crime and immigration. You are just not smart enough to come up with a logical argument. Call me bigot if you want for I couldn't give a lesser fuck. I am all for immigration, just choose the migrants more carefully. Like I said, less from Jamaica and more from Senegal. Less from Russia and more from Romania.
