The Asahi (Japanese) reports that Sunday saw the annual tatami tossing competition take place in Yatsuhiro, Kumamoto prefecture. Women and children throw a half-weight 3kg mat while men throw a full mat. The fiercely contested event was won by a 72 year old man with a distance of 8.07 metres.

When I get home Sunday morning from my usual Friday night out, my resident rice cooker can throw a mat for a distance that would probably beat their aggregate. So far I've been able to duck most of them...

On second thought, I'm looking at it from a 6' 10" man's point of view. I could easily wrap my arms around that thing to give it a good rip. The average Japanese guy despite his strength, wouldn't have the leverage I do.
