Auto Union Leader Invokes Pearl Harbour

Postby Mulboyne » Fri Jun 20, 2008 8:21 am

Financial Post: Union leader urges Americans not to buy Japanese vehicles, invokes Pearl Harbour
A senior labour leader with the Canadian Auto Workers union confronted Americans buying Asian cars recently about their choices and compared Japanese car dealers to the enemy in the Second World War, according to a union summary of the trip. Ron Carlyle, the CAW's chair representing workers at General Motors Corp.'s car plant in Oshawa, Ont., spoke at a GM union leadership meeting this past spring about a trip he took to a NASCAR event in the United States. Minutes of the meeting, dated March 20 and posted on the CAW Local 222 website, describe what Mr. Carlyle said. "Ron spoke about NASCAR trip. He questioned Americans buying Kia, Toyota, Honda. Reminded them of 9/11. 'Would you buy from Iraqi or Afghani dealerships?' Their response was 'No!' So Ron asked 'Why do you buy from Japanese dealers? - What about Pearl Harbour?'"

Well, the US might as well include Germany, Canada, France, Mexico and the UK since there have been wars with them as well. As for his question, who working for his Union would have been around to remember Pearl Harbor?

A racist slug at best....

Poor Canuck, he has no basis for his racism and has to borrow from the neighbor downstairs. "pardon me, could you spare a cup of pretext?"

1) If one is going to play nationalism card, you should do it your own country...I don't need to hear some self interested foreigner complaining about how we're not patriotic enough in the US
2) Plenty of J company cars are built in the US
3) Plenty of US car company cars have lots of parts made outside the US or even flat out built outside the US/Canada and then shipped to the US to be sold.

American Automobile Labeling Act details for auto model year 2008

http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/staticfiles/DOT/NHTSA/Traffic%20Injury%20Control/Articles/Associated%20Files/AALA/AALA2008a.pdf

While it varies from model to model, there are plenty of J company cars that are not too off from the same domestic content level of 'US' car company models

First of all Kia is a Korean company. Totally different country. Second, Honda has over a dozen factories in the US and at least 2 in Canada (that's a lot considering its small population).

Here's a little wiki blurb on Toyota this guy needs to read:

Toyota directly employed around 34,675 people in the United States, invested USD $15.5 billion, produced 1.2 million vehicles using US and foreign auto parts, sold 2.54 million vehicles, and donated USD $340 million to nonprofits. It has in total 10 plants, USD $2.9 billion per year payroll, purchased USD $28 billion in parts and supplies from 30 states. It created around 386,000 jobs in the United States as result of Toyota's spending and demand from suppliers. It celebrated its 70th year anniversary in the United States in 2007.

That's not a very good example to show superiority toward. You could have the IQ of a stale bagel and still be head and shoulders over this slug.
