A.A. Gill's "Mad in Japan"

Postby kusai Jijii » Sun Aug 24, 2008 4:11 pm

I just finished Gill's essay 'Mad in Japan' from his 2002 book AA Gill is Away It reportedly caused a fair stink (including a formal protest from the Japanese Embassy in the UK). I personally didnt agree with all of his observations, but I found it one of the funniest "newbie reports" I have ever read. He almost deserves honorable membership on these boards.
Just wanting to know if anyone else has read it, and what they thought of it.

I read it a few years back. It's a classic polemic, all right. Over the top, but in a good way.

Thanks Mul,
call me lazy, but I kinda knew that someone like your good self would have a much better chance of linking the essay (and drastically improving the thread) than techno-challenged-me.

The original link was dead but I changed it to one from the wayback machine and it seemed to work OK for me. Does it not show up for anyone else?

This is a traditional and hackneyed way to revenge to Japan and Japanese for real loser gaijins who failed to adapt into Japan and Japanese despite having some affection to Japan. And by this way, they can justify their indirect racistic way under the name of Journalism.
"Oh no no, don't misunderstand. This is just a journalism!!!"

Yeah. And like hackneyed is a word that the average, run-of-the-mill salaryman like yourself uses...;) Your game is dropping Take.
I'm willing to bet that Gill attempts to 'wind up' his audiences almost as much as you do, you nisemono-nihonjon fucktard.
You gotta publish. Really...

And if some Japanese criticize this kind of gaijins for their sneak indirect racistic way of writing, they start crying, "This is a attack to freespeech!!!! Japanese try to press down westerner's freespeech!!!. Be careful, world!!!!!".

Mad in Japan

Postby oyajikun » Wed Jan 05, 2011 6:36 am

Nice morning read.

"I started off this journey by saying the Japanese were weird. Well, weird is
an observation, not an explanation. By the end, I was absolutely convinced
that the explanation is that they are not eccentric, not just different, but
certifiably bonkers. Japan is a lunatic asylum built on a hideous history,
vile philosophy and straitjacket culture."

A.A. Gill's "Mad in Japan"

Postby Typhoon » Wed Jan 05, 2011 9:23 am

Chavs going on about Japan.

Priceless.
Never criticize anyone until you've walked several kilometres in their shoes.
Because

1. You're now several kilometres away; and

2. You've got their shoes.
