Yomiuri: Suit filed over death of man tossed in air
The bereaved family of a 60-year-old company employee who died in September from serious injuries suffered when he was tossed into the air by his colleagues in celebration at his retirement party in Shiga Prefecture in November 2007, has filed a criminal complaint, it has been learned. The family of Seiji Sakumoto, a transport firm employee of Kusatsu in the prefecture, filed the complaint with Kusatsu Police Station against three male employees of the firm in Ritto in the prefecture on suspicion of gross negligence resulting in death. The family members said they hoped the police would find out who was responsible to prevent a similar incident from occurring in the future. The three employees have admitted the allegations, and the police plan to establish a criminal case against them. According to the complaint, Sakumoto was thrown into the air and allowed to fall to a tatami mat floor by three of his subordinates in their 20s to 40s at the farewell party at about 8 p.m. on Nov. 18, 2007, at a banquet room in a ryokan in Kusatsu. Sakumoto suffered neck and back injuries and developed respiratory problems. He was bedridden and died of blood poisoning in September. The farewell party was attended by about 40 people, and more than the three employees were involved in tossing Sakumoto into the air. However, as details remain unknown, the bereaved family filed the complaint against the three employees who were confirmed to have participated in the incident. The employees were reportedly drunk at the time. The bereaved family insists the employees could have foreseen an accident occurring from their dangerous action. They also claimed that the three failed to prevent Sakumoto from falling to the floor. Sakumoto reportedly had been looking forward to going to the Kobe Luminarie, an annual illumination festival held in Kobe in December, a month after the accident, with his wife, Yumiko, 59.
