BBC4 Japan Season

Season trailer

BBC4 in the UK is currently running a Japan season. This involves showing a number of Japanese films along with some specially made programming like one I've just watched called "In Search of Wabi Sabi". At the moment, you need to be in the UK or have a proxy UK IP address to see this free on the BBC iPlayer but some of this programming might yet end up on YouTube over the coming weeks. Meanwhile you can see excerpts from the season on the BBC website as well as "phrase of the day" clips like the ones in the trailer above.

To ponder and wonder
About what lies yonder
To think of times so much fonder

There have been a couple of good programmes in the season to date but no-one has put clips of those on YouTube yet. Some of the programmes this time have appeared in other BBC Japan seasons and there are clips of those available. Here's one which I didn't much care for but there are a couple of good details:

I enjoyed this 90 minute travelogue called "Fish". The quality isn't fantastic but it's definitely watchable . It's amazing to me that only 5 people replied to the presenter's advert for an assistant. Over the 90 minutes, he touches on Tsukiji, raising koi carp, city fisherman, cormorant fishing, Minamata, fugu, funazushi, women ama divers and dolphin hunting in Taiji among other topics. If you only have time to watch a short segment then try part six which looks at fermented funazushi near Lake Biwa. It's wonderfully surreal as their interviewee hijacks the filming to make sure they do it his way.
