This is a common story across a number of industries. Japan's reaction to deflation has largely been to produce the same goods and services at cheaper and cheaper cost. One of the main costs they have targeted is labour which is why production gets moved offshore or else domestic wages get cut. There has been insufficient effort put into increasing productivity or creating new products and markets. You don't have to be a rabid free market advocate to realize that growth is the main solution to a number of Japan's problems but there is no strategy for that in many parts of the economy. To be fair, no other economy in modern times has faced Japan's deflation challenge but you would hope that other countries might have tried some different solutions over twenty years.

Unfortunatly I think that some people would rather be an animator and get paid shit then be an employ somewhere else and maybe make more money. They don't care that they can't get rich at it, they just want to make cartoons all day.
