70 Detainees Mount Protest at West Japan Immigration Detention Center

Postby Mulboyne » Thu Mar 11, 2010 6:16 pm

This piece about allegations of abuse at immigration detention centres appeared in the Japan Times on Tuesday. Reports out today say that 70 detainees at the West Japan immigration detention centre in Ibaraki, Osaka, have been refusing food since Monday in protest at not being allowed out freedom while their status is under review. The authorities at the centre say that the inmates are accepting food from support groups so it is not a complete hunger strike. They are also saying that they have no plans to relax their regulations in response to the protest. The JT article says that provisional release requires "a Japanese guarantor and bail of 500,000 to 1 million yen".

I wouldn't be surprised if this gets taken up by the international media. A call for sanctions against Japan perhaps?:flame:

I say that if there are 70 detainees mounting Protest, then she must be a very tired woman by now.

I highly doubt there will be much interest in this. Sorry to be so blunt, but we are talking about mostly black, brown and SE Asian people with maybe a few white convicted drug dealers. In other words, no big deal.

If you had an attractive blonde Western female... big tits a bonus... however ... they'd be talking up a storm.

Asahi: Group - Hunger strike worked
Supporters of inmates held at the Nishi-Nihon Japan Immigration Center said a hunger strike in March has led to more provisional releases for those with health problems. But immigration center officials denied any connection between the hunger strike and the provisional releases. About 70 male inmates began a hunger strike March 8, demanding that those with serious health problems be given provisional releases to receive medical care. A citizens group aiding the inmates said that after the hunger strike, a Pakistani man whose weight had plummeted due to depression and fever was granted a provisional release. Another Pakistani man taken to a hospital in December after falling unconscious from extremely high blood pressure was also told he would be given a provisional release. The two had been confined at the immigration center for over a year. The support group had been requesting a provisional release for them since late last year because of their failing health. The request was initially rejected in February.
