Japan on the Web, from Japanzine

Postby GuyJean » Sat Apr 03, 2004 4:37 pm

While munching on Pita and Humus and occasionally sipping from the creamy pint of Hobgoblin Dark, I thumbed carelessly through April's issue of Japanzine; the free publication that's slowly bringing the much needed 'edge' back to Japan's Gaijinzine scene.

"Yeah.. 'Best of the web'.. What do they know?", I bitterly thought to myself.

When suddenly, without so much as a choke, gasp, or snort, I discovered.. 'being discovered'!

Yeah.. I saw that too, knew it was associated with someone at FG, but wasn't sure who... Congrats!

Waaaay off-topic here, but I have to comment on this pic. It's from a PhotoShop book right? I had the exact same pic on the CD that came with the book we used in school 3 years ago. :D

I thought it very interesting how they admitted to eating crow over their original opinion about blogs. It started with the Hunkabutta review (a fabulous blog) as is Antipixel.

Wish they covered mobile sites though.

Japan on the Web 2007..

Postby GuyJean » Sat Mar 17, 2007 8:57 am

Japan on the Web
http://www.seekjapan.jp/article-1/866/Japan+on+the+Web
It's been nearly ten years now since Japanzine's first “Japan on the Web” issue, our survey of the most essential websites for people living the dream in the Land of the Rising Sun. Back then, the World Wide Web was largely the domain of geeks, freaks and folks with way too much time on their hands − and, well, that's pretty much how it looks today. But the internet has gone from being a marginal concern to an integral part of most people's lives: imagine a world with no e-mail, Google, Wikipedia or puerile YouTube videos... makes you shudder, doesn't it?

The following guide is intended to help you get the most out of the web while you're here in Japan. It's by no means definitive but, hey, there's only so much web surfing a guy can manage before he starts to get a weird tingling sensation around the back of his eyes and a mild sense of nausea. While you'll probably be familiar with some of these sites, we hope you'll run into a few new faces, too. Oh, and if you already know all of them, maybe you should consider going outside and reminding yourself what the sun looks like, eh?

I don't know how long the list has been up but I see Japanzine have their Japan Web rankings up for 2009.

FG gets a namecheck with the following comment:

The site for the incurably culture-shocked. Ever had an urge to curl one off on the vacant seat next to you, just so your fellow-passengers have a real reason not to sit down? Then this is what you've been looking for. Reporting on all things 'wrong' with Japan, Fucked Gaijin provides a portal for your anti-Japan angst. Spending too much time on it, though, can leave you feeling depressed and irritable.

Oddly enough, I've never found FG to be like that but there is no doubt that a lot of people would agree with the description. Other sites mentioned in the "Nippon News" category are Japan Probe and Neojaponisme, which seems like good company to be in, and The Black Ship which is a new one on me. Japan Probe "wins" which I don't think anyone would complain about.
