Police have arrested a 43-year-old American man on suspicion of stealing a car with two children in the back seat from the parking lot of a convenience store in Ome, Tokyo, on June 15.

Police suspect the man is part of a gang of thieves responsible for a number of car thefts in the Tokyo metropolitan area.

Err, they didn't somehow imply all Americans/foreigners are part of the same gang, did they? I mean, I'm not above fencing the odd mamachari to the Nork guy behind the pachinko parlour, but cars are too much hassle.

I'm not saying it would be the right thing to do. Though leaving your kids unattended in a car with the keys in the ignition is pretty fucking stupid. Especially when one parent could have easily stayed in the car. Seriously, what could you buy at a convenience store that would require two people to carry?

I most certainly do.

I let one of my kitteh in her bag on the whip while I went picking her some McNugget to cheer up after a vaccination at the vet. It was a b it cold evening so I used the car remote start to let to engine running and maintain some warmth for her. Seems the engine stopped only few minutes after I left letting the temp drop. Lucky it was not a threatening situation. Don't know what happened, couldn't recreate the 'bug' despite the fact that I'm pretty sure the mechanic saw his life fast forward in front of his eyes when I went to rip him a new bunghole.

Leaving kids alone in a running car with key in ignition is a recipe for disaster. Mine don't allow control of the locking/unlocking from outside if a transceiver key is detected inside (kids and pets are exceptionally good at locking themselves accidentally) . I have to keep the emergency spare inside a copper mesh pouch to prevent unwanted policing... On the other side of the spectrum, if the smart key is not sensed in the driver seat, it lock ignition and gearshift. Need to have the key in my right pocket. Not in a vest or in a bag on the passenger seat
