Tipping Taxi Drivers

Recently I've noticed a number of my Japanese friends tipping cab drivers. Not going out of their way to give a good tip but telling them to keep the change. Especially on cheaper rides. Is this a new thing or is it just that as I get older and more established so do the people I hang out with and they can't be bothered with getting a little change back.

Taxi drivers are about the only ones I tip in Japan, especially when they go out of their way to bring me to my destination.

I do it when the taxi is clean, the driver polite and drives in a civilized manner.

I used to do that until they added the Pasmo/Suica/Etc. payment :twisted:

I've seen it a few times, and from what I know of the person doing it, maybe 30% is not wanting to have to fiddle around with coins, 20% is "look at how generous I am tossing around money (even if it is usually less than 100 yen)" and 50% of it is "I'm above you in status because I don't drive the general public around the place at their demanding beck and call, and I'm going to prove that bestowing trinkets on you."

Last time I tried to pay with ETC i got the car stuck between the cashier masheens...

Hmm, I guess I belong to the 30% then. And I think that salaries of taxi drivers in Japan are not very generous, so a tip will be helpful, and I am willing to tip if they give me as customer a good experience.

I tip them, although it's usually because the fare from the bar to my house is like 900 yen and I'm too drunk to care about 100 yen in change. And they are way better than cabbies in the states.
