'I like cockroaches': Hikikomori-kun and Gokinosaurus

Postby Taro Toporific » Mon Nov 18, 2002 1:55 pm

'I like cockroaches': Hikikomori-kun quoted in the Observer UK article about hikikomori (acute social withdrawal) "Japan's teen hermits spread fear". . .
Japan's teen hermits spread fear

"Saito's clinic, groups of patients meet twice a week. .... The theme of discussion last week was 'my favourite animal'. Of the dozen of so participants, one or two had clearly made good progress and were chatting away about dogs and birds. But many seemed to be far away. 'I like cockroaches,'said one gentle but shy man."
...
"Specialists say this is only the tip of the iceberg. Tamaki Saito, the psychiatrist who coined the term, estimates there are a million hikikomori cases. 'I think it is dangerous for Japanese society because such people never work or pay tax,' he said. 'We might be able to rescue some, but half a million will stay withdrawn from society for 20 or 30 years. We could end up supporting them for half a century.' "

I saw a show about this. There was one guy in his 20s who hadn`t left his room in 10 years. What these kids need is for their parents to stop coddling them and instead give them a swift kick in the rear end.

I agree about the swift kick.

But cultural reasons make this difficult. Family shame and fear of loss of face are reasons.
I will not abide ignorant intolerance just for the sake of getting along.

Study: Roaches spread cancer-causing bacteria

Yomiuri Shimbun 2002/11/21

Helicobacter pylori, bacteria believed to increase the risk of stomach cancer in humans, may be spread through cockroach droppings, a group of researchers found in a recent study.

More than half the Japanese population reportedly is infected with the bacteria. Although the bacteria were thought to be transmitted through human waste, how they spread from person to person was unknown.
