Chainsaw Art By Keiji Kidokoro

Master chainsaw artist Keiji Kidokoro has won yet another international event with the work "Pegasus" (above). Twenty one competitors took part in the Husqvarna Carving Cup (perhaps surprisingly, that link is borderline NSFW because they advertise a topless calendar at the bottom) where the challenge was to create a work over three days. Kidokoro chose to use Japanese oak for his piece and was the favourite with spectators and judges. Chainsaw art can be hazardous: Kidokoro missed day two of a 2005 event in Britain "with sawdust in his eye" but rallied to at least finish. You can see a gallery of his work here and slideshows of him carving here and here.. While there are a number of Japanese artists competing at these international events, Kidokoro has the highest profile after winning the world championship in 2006.
