Jesus Christ! Focus people!!!! This is a hate site, and this is a hate thread!!!

With wikipedia as a starting point, there are apparently numerous theories, including "that which is discarded/trash" in Osakaben. The theory regarded most scholarly today, is that horumon used to be more widely applied to any number of "stamina"/aphrodisiac dishes, but now refers to that one in particular.

The English wikipedia article is in need of an edit.

Usually I would say you could have researched this yourself, but I do recognise that that would result in limited discussion here.

And now we return to our regular programming, gloating over the internet errors of a non-celeb individual...

See I've heard all those theories but then I must ask why it's written in katakana if it's not of foreign origin? (and more importantly, why the eating of asspipe in Japan is associated with "stamina/aphrodisiacs?")

Marketing cool, and if you say that your cow and pig guts are aphrodisiacs, you have a greater chance of shifting stock and turning it into Yen. And the strongest theory is that it did relate (in a completely unscientific but sexy marketing way) to hormones.

"Tobacco" is usually written in hiragana and sometime kanji even though it is a foreign word.

たばこ comes from the Portuguese word (some historians argue Spanish) "tabaco", not the English word. The reason it has kanji for it was because of the age of the word; most foreign words introduced to Japan in the 16th century and earlier have 当て字 for them.

P.S. The Tobacco & Salt Museum in Tokyo is pretty interesting. That's where I learned this.

I know all that. My point was that the writing system usually used isn't necessarily an indication of whether the word is foreign or native.

Visa overstayers rally in Tokyo for residency permits
Monday, Nov. 19, 2012
A group of foreign residents who have overstayed their visas rallied in Tokyo's Ginza shopping district Sunday to call on the government to grant them special residency permits to remain in Japan and avoid disrupting the lives of their long-settled family members.
Rally organizer Asian People's Friendship Society said it wants to make more Japanese aware of the nation's 67,000 visa overstayers and their place in society.
"We have lived diligently, and we will continue to do so. Please don't forget that we are here," said Abbasi Majid, 44, an Iranian who has lived in Japan for 21 years and has an 11-year-old daughter with his Filipino wife.
Majid was among some 100 people who participated in Sunday's rally, which included 34 foreigners who want the government to review their deportation orders. All but two of the 34 have families, and most of their children were born in Japan and are attending Japanese schools.

Taro, brilliant photo!

Theory at japologism is that they're all on bail, just like MQT likely is now (possibly using the donation money).
Seems if you have a Japanese guarantor and the cash, gaijin CAN get bail. Unlike claims to the contrary by various armchair activists.
Not sure here.

For these people, who unlike MQT are actually trying to hold down jobs and want to be upstanding members of society - could it be Immigration electing to kick the issue down the road? Keep them in limbo, don't finalize the process that would have to end in deportation if they follow the letter of the law, but don't establish any precedent on immunity for anyone who manages to squeeze out a pup or two while here illegally? Are they allowed to work in the meantime though?

If Immi accepts MQT and gives him a visa, it would be an insult to these people.

Meanwhile, a fan of a Canadian-born author, journalist and musician who has traveled in 98 countries and eight war zones has attempted to have said journalist's bio added to Wikipedia, but those nasty Wikipedians aren't playing fair. What are they thinking of, rejecting the man who not only "first met Japanese rock icon Asai Kenichi of Blankey Jet City in 1994" and who was "strangled and beaten unconscious by a gang and left naked overnight in a park in Nairobi, Kenya with damages to his nose, ribs and vocal chords".

They're just a load of manipulative, belligerent, bellicose editors misusing policies, making spurious accusations unsupported by verifiable evidence.

(Hat-tip to Japologism)

He really is unpleasant isn't he? At least we know now how he has been spending his days considering that he will not get any work a jounro any more. Hhhmm perhaps this is why he is trying to get onto wikipedia to show prospective employers his credentials.

I'm almost starting to pity ol' CJ.* What a desperate, tortured soul.

My advice: let it go, Christopher, let it go.

Perhaps the two social media retards should pair up with the so-called "Twitter Coach" advising CJ, the so-called "Global Journalist". Just imagine the digital spam they could generate!

Maybe I should start marketing myself as a "Wikipedia Coach", I could certainly do a better job of getting CJ an entry than this "Rollingwagon" user (who, probably by pure coincidence has a writing style remarkably similar to the Great War Correspondent himself). Hint: it requires subtlety, tenaciousness, a somewhat more objective style and also the willingness to refrain from verbal assaults on established Wikipedia editors. I assume at the very least CJ will be publicly distancing himself from this uncouth, arrogant "Rollingwagon" character.

When I first read this I thought it must be someone other than CJ, since CJ has shown that he is unable to write the word "evidence" without attaching the word "overwhelming" in front of it, but then I had a look at the discussion page. I doubt that anyone would put as much effort into supporting a Wiki entry for CJ than the gentleman himself. I wouldn't mind really, except that the drama gets tedious all too quickly.

"How NOT to win friends and influence people" should be the title of his next book.

His tirade against the editors was just so sad and desperate and also really bad mannered. The entitlement that he feels is so misguided.

Did you read the puff piece about himself that he was trying to get onto Wikipedia? He really does believe in his own hype so perhaps he and MQT are a match made on the net.

tl;dr it all, but I did note that our hero, whose colleague Nelson Rand survived being shot three times during the Red Shirt Rebellion in Bangkok, ran out of the shower and watched the magnitude 9.0 earthquake shake his Japanese-style home for about 4 minutes on March 11, 2011.

Given his lifestyle, he was probably just out of bed and having a shower when the quake hit.

My biggest fear is actually to be "caught with my pants down" in a major disaster...

It would make an eye-catching entry on your CJ-style 3rd-person resume...

"GomiGirl, whose moderation on multiple forums has met wide acclaim, watched the magnitude 9.0 earthquake shake her Japanese-style toilet in Tokyo for over four minutes before she was able to pull her pants up."

Personally I'm more scared of being caught underneath an unstable piece of infrastructure, any concerns about the state of my underwear would be secondary ;)
